I'm new to Joomla (using 1.5.2 stable) and have purchased several books and gone through tutorials. Starting last week, however, whenever I click on ANY menu link from the frontpage, the template disappears on the new page load. The template still looks great on HOME, but this problem occurs for any template that I choose.

I've removed all files and done a fresh install and the site seemed to work until I tried to add content and then the problem returned that the frontpage looks fine, but clicking on any link loads the content without the template.

I've rebuilt the site 4 times now.

Help is definitely appreciated!

For an example, go to http://jcinewyorkstate.org/ccop

Hey ! I get to reply to my own issue! I hope this helps someone else if they have the same problem.

I reinstalled AGAIN and went one move at a time until I found it.

All of the tutorials tell you to click "YES" for enabling Searcg Engine Friendly URLS, but if I enable it, none of the links pick up the template formatting or use the CSS file outside of the first page.'

Again, this only started last week. Prior to my having this issue, the site worked very well for over a month.

thanks a ton for posting this error and the "fix" since i've been perseverating on this for the last day or so after my site's template stops applying to all pages except the home page. Like you suggested, once I turned "Search Engine Friendly URLs" back to off, the templates applied everywhere.

Now, how do we get Search Engine Friendly URLs feature working (I've got Joomla 1.5.2)?

Actually, I would advise using a Dynamic DNS service to create a universal URL and point it to wherever your site is. The bonus is that in the future if you change server information, you only have to point to the new build. I also use it in place of a "site is down" message by pointing the DDNS to a mirror site or to a static free Google site just to keep from losing people who might be trying to contact us.

I always recommend using ChangeIP.com because they are no frills, easy-to-use, and generally have great pricing because they don't advertise (so they don't have to pay for a promotional budget).

Another benefit is that if you have a 3rd party doing webwork who is slow to update or "hi-jacks" your site, the DDNS allows you to keep control because you don't have to go through the cumbersome process of domain transfers and the waiting cycle. DDNS entries are updated and usable within 3-5 minutes (though, my experience with ChangeIP has been within 1 minute).

Final bonus -- you don't have to keep changing your stationary/promotional materials/t-shirts. The URL will always be the same.

Anyway, just my suggestion ;)

Thanks for the info on ddns. I'll still trying to get over the month hosting price, so I'll see about adding on another cost; but, that sounds like a crafty way to go.
Thank you!

Thanks for posting this. Thankfully I didn't even have to go through the trouble of the re-install and it fixed my site. I can deal without search engine friendly URLs for a while. I was getting really nervous there for about 30 minutes!

Thanks so much for posting the solution. I am new to Joomla and constantly tinkering with it so without keeping a log I was unsure which change caused the problem. You saved me a lot of time.

I seem to have sorted this by changing the name of the file htaccess.txt in the root folder to .htaccess and switching on the SEF URLs and Mod rewrite in the Global Config

That didn't help either. Even replacing .htaccess with new as some-one suggested worked for him :(

Hi Roger,
you're right, there are very friendly people on this forum, I got my problem sorted out in the end too.

I would like to advise you that you should try and get the real problem sorted out, all you did now is get rid of the symptoms. Another component that you would like to try is sh40SEF for xstra security, promoting your site and speeding up.

Regards enjoy the holidays!

Hi rugerio2

Read above carefully, I didn't!!! The point here is to switch everything at the same time (it should be optional but it seems it's not). Do not try and do it one by one not changing the other settings and CLEAR YOUR CACHE (which I also didn't do the first time round, learn from my mistakes). You should clear cache in you Joomla admin and in your browser. Let us know how did it go. ;)

Yes yes yes yes yes !! Thank you thank you thank you!

That helped me SO much!
I have been trying to fix this issues for hours now!
I hade the same problem, only front page worked and showed CSS style and script.

I went:
Global settings > Search Engine Friendly URLs > NO !

Now all my pages looks brilliant!

...Anyone has a fix for the "SF urls"? It does not work to rename htaccess on mine. The server gets inaccessible.

Just to clarify for you all...

SEF turned ON is for sure the best method (if you consider Google ranking to be important).

What you MUST do is to rename your htaccess.txt to .htaccess, and tick the option within Global Config to "Use .htaccess".

Joomla core SEF works perfectly and I use it all the time.

Good Luck

The reason that probably happens is due to file permissions. Make sure your .htaccess file is set to 644.

Firstly please let me thanks all those good people who have posted their answers to my questions.
I am such a Newbie that i have no idea how to gain access to the .htaccess file nor set it to 644.My Joomla was uploaded thru Siteground.com and i did nt install it to my computer as most people would probably have done.Im thinking that it may be possible however through the siteground login center.I need to do alot more hard work. Its all very slow at first.I guess its like pushing a giant snowball downhill or something like that.

Thank you for this info. It seams that this is still a problem in Joomla 1.5.9. I went through the same thing you did and I was just about to convince myself to switch back to Wordpress.

Anyway, my site doesn't required SEF links, but as it grows it will sooner or later when the content comes in. What do we do then?

Check out this tutorial to ensure all steps are completed correctly. Also note the troubleshoooting advice at the end of the tutorial

http://www.scribd.com/doc/2300167/Jooml ... t-SEF-URLs

There are very few cases where this does not work. After you have done all these things then come back to the forum and tell us which part of the implementation breaks your site and who your host is and I am sure someone can help you.

Dear IOVYAN,

I could just kiss you!!! I was about to write that "you don't even know" how hard it was to find the information on how to fix this problem. But from the amount of love that you have received for posting that solution, I'm sure that you know quite well.

THANK YOU!!!
