Does the default installation of 2.5 use cookies, and if so, what for?

I have nothing in my Cookie Settings under Global Config. What should I put there? I'm guessing that if it's empty, cookies are disabled.

Does 2.5 comply with the new Euro Cookie law? I'm guessing no. Would anyone want to recommend an extension which does?

Yes, cookies are used to track sessions - and they are necessary for some operations within Joomla.

The cookie settings under global config are used to fine-tune the cookies set by Joomla. If you don't know what they do - then you don't need to alter the default (blank) values. The defaults will work for most users.

Regarding the EU cookie law - there are some extensions in the JED to assist an administrator with compliance. I won't say anything about the individual extensions because I am the author of one of them, and mentioning which one is mine might be considered self-promotion (something frowned upon in the forums).
