I think we need to figure out what's the package of integration before the stable version released.

* modules to shows at Joomla site(page)?
* user synchronized?

or what ? ???

anything else... I'd like to use it via plug-in and not via bridge, but the most important issue is about their security level!

I haven't seen any security problems yet, but they are only on 0.6.2 I believe so in that there could be security issues. I don't think I would use Magento on a live site but I would be thinking about how to integrate Magento into Joomla so that when it does go 1.0 we could be ready. The best part is that Joomla will most likely be production ready at around the same time or within at least a month of each other. So this could be a great thing.

You know if someone could point me to a Joomla developer tutorial on what you guys are talking about then I could most likely be of better assistance in this effort. I think it would totally rock if we could do something. The only thing that I'm curious about is how will templating go? Of course if they have an API then we could not have to worry about their templating system and just pull the data into Joomla...i'm thinking off the top of my head.

@tbianco
- talked to Chris? He said to me sending a message to you...

My very first experience (pele-mele):
- Magento unzipped : a bit heavy, 115,4 Mo - as to freewebhosts for testing it, them being free and their ftp tight, upload could take eons.
* mandatory SSL option when installing - on MAMP for OSX, choose http instead of https, and port 80 or 8888
* PHP5 only, to install it with PHP4 is possible but one has to tweak some files
- it comes with a pre-installed template, but one has to fiddle with back-end admin before seeing something on front-end (true that I am a Joomla-spoiled child, lol)
+ an already very responsive/informative community and a nice welcome message when registering
+ multilanguage-ready (english, german, french)
next soon ...

Regarding the PHP 4 thing, the PHP foundation and all of Zend is officially not supporting PHP4 anymore and rightly so. It's been several years since PHP5 has been out and they are quickly working on PHP6.

I would probably upload the zip package and then unzip it once it was on the server. Probably would take a heck of a lot less time.

@newart, no I haven't gotten in touch with Chris and he hasn't gotten in touch with me. I'm looking for tutorials on how to create components and plugins or whatever they are called for Joomla. Btw, what was Magento's response after you contacted them?

if I am right, it's PHP 5.2.x above suggested.
Multi-language is not ready done since translation method is not out yet.

... maybe we should focus on integration instead of feature discussion .. this is not the right forum  . :D

Dear Roy, as you know some members of our forum are very interested in Magento.

Now what I'd like to see is very simple, a very short idea of what's the future of Magento by you, in the same time, waiting other members interested in Magento for starting an How-to-do Joomla / Magento :)

I think the Magento site speaks for itself (www.magentocommerce.com) - you can also see a video about our vision for the product - http://www.magentocommerce.com/media/vi ... -ecommerce

Additionally, here is a short interview I conducted that covered some interesting areas - http://www.ecommerceoptimization.com/ar ... ecommerce/

As far as I understand, Magento is rather a standalone solution with its own ACL , etc. (CMS included).
I would rather advise at this stage to use it in a wrapper and a separate database if used through Joomla interface.

Maybe, when 1.6 is released with its improved ACL, it could be possible to design a bridge, but I am not even sure of this.

Yeah I figured this would be something that would end up happening, would the be realization of different programming styles. You know the one thing that I'm don't understand is what a wrapper would include in it's implementation with joomla. Does that mean the store is contained within and iFrame? If so then that wouldn't be a feasible thing because search engines don't really index iFrames all that well.

I'm not sure that Magento has it's own full blown CMS, I think much like Zend Cart it has the ability to have pages that hold content within them but it would always be in the context of the shopping cart layout, example would be the two sidebars on the left and right with the content in the middle.

NOW.... here's the flip side of things, if they end up creating an API in which we are able to interface with the Magento shopping cart program then that could be something useful. At that point creating a bridge wouldn't be all that hard I wouldn't think. But here's the thing, if all we did was use the API (if they even created it), then it would sort of defeat the purpose of using magento because at that point you're using the data and not the system of it's sexy layout and functionality.

So this leads me to the thought that it might be cool if the magento team could create a pared down shopping cart with functionality that could be placed within joomla as a standalone component, which I think that would be called a wrapper? I'm not sure. I'm a joomla noob.

Tell me what you think.

??? ... not sure what to do next ..

what's in my mind is

* user synchronize (bridge) whatever to avoid user to login twice or use two pairs of accounts/password
* create the same theme for Joomla and Magento
* create Joomla module to pull out data from Magento DB (shopping cart, latest product, popular product ... )

I am not sure this make sense or not

these last 3 posts are very important as they are focused to what-to-do and how-to-be-connected-with...

I understand, now, it's important to see what's the opinion of the Great guest Roy and then to understand what's the best option for having a Magento connected with Joomla!

It's important other opinions, too...

that's a very good question ...
I hard to believe it's easy to integrate both of them.
I can't even image what will happen once SEO turn on.

:'(

I was trying to pick up the Zend Framework, but there are no much resource out there.
The book (ZF) is coming out slowly .... so I'll just wait and see.

The most important difference is the template system where joomla users are spoiled compared to magento :-)

What the first goal should be here I think is creating a front-end layer for joomla on the magento database.
- Create modules that show the various list to up-sell items etc etc.
- Create a login/acl bridge
- Create a catalog component for joomla that gets the products from the magento db
- Create a cart/checkout component that pings magento payment engine

An Iframe would be a bad solution, useless to me.

The backend of magento is to huge to wrap in a joomla component and should be seen as a standalone manager for the products etc. Maybe a component could be created that only provides a way to login via the joomla backend en get redirected to the megento admin.

I've been working on an enterprise commerce platform for 2 years and I know the company that was using the system was trilled by the flexibility of the joomla 1.5 with override template system, the easy way of creating menu's and the easy way to be able to manage the menu's.
They constantly changed names of menu items, shifted them up and down in the menu tree based on marketing actions and analytics. That way they could drive traffic to parts of the site that where new or needed more attention.

The Joomla flexibility we are used to is key for a good commerce solution for Joomla.
