JFTP::login: Unable to login

Okay, I'm pretty proficient and "I" can't find a viable solution in my searching.

I get the same error when I try to add just the password in the Global Configuration » Server » FTP section.

I can add data to every other field in the FTP section and it saves properly.
Permissions are wide open, 777, via CPanel file manager.
FTP is fully accessible via Filezilla with the supplied username and password.
FTP works fine on the Joomla! 3.2.3 install in the next folder.

If I manually edit the configuration.php file, I can add the appropriate FTP password in the correct line, and save the file, but extensions within the Joomla! 3.2 installation still give the dreaded "JFTP::login: Unale to login" when trying to access the FTP.

So, I ask again, on behalf of newbies and seasoned IT people alike, has anyone run into this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?

PLEASE don't reply with a suggestion. I've read and tried a dozen useless ones. I'm just looking for that one person who has the solution. Thank you.
