need a slideshow with customizable thumbnails

I need to be able to show on my homepage an image with text which is linkable to an article and thumbnails below of the image(s) (up to 5 or 6 max) - with the requirement that the thumbnails be customizable. I find many extensions which simply make a thumbnail identical to the larger image, but my customer is requiring the potential for a different image.

Any help or thoughts will be much appreciated.
