K2 Spam comments
Hi,
In K2 I see a lot of spam comments with links, etc in it.
I would like to know if there's a wait to not get these annoying spam messages.
I tried enabling the option tonot automatically publish comments but that gives me heaps of work every day to delete all the spam and to look what is not spam!
Autopublishing the comments does gives me crappy comments every day!
Isn't there a recaptcha fucntion to enable on the K2 Comments or another extension that works with K2 and is better for comments?
Thanks
Kim

Re: K2 Spam comments
The best option is to enable recaptcha, it's already a feature of k2 and can easily be turned on.
Select the k2 component in the admin area, then on the right hand side there is the toolbar button for Parameters, click that and in the box that opens under the section for Comments there is the ability to turn recaptcha on and inputs for the public and private keys that are given when you sign up and register your domain on https://www.google.com/recaptcha
Hope this helps.

Re: K2 Spam comments
You can choose the comments will not be published automatically, but you must accept them. In this way not seen them in your hand, but only in the Admin.
I also have problems with these damn spammers and those are crazy hard.

Re: K2 Spam comments
Recapcha will reduce spam but not completely remove it, mainly because people are using capcha solving software. It's still better than nothing.

Re: K2 Spam comments
@oxiepagen you say that you can choose for the comments to be accepted but not published right away. How would I go about doing that exactly? I have looked through the k2 parameters and cannot figure it out.
I want to not only be able to cut out spam but also to be able to moderate comments and either accept/deny them before they are displayed on the website. Thanks in advance!

@shaunyness, you can turn off automatic publishing in the parameters, look for enable comment auto-publishing about a third of the way down the list, hope that helps

I have disabled K2 comment, even disable blog menu, but I can still receive hundred of comments everyday. No idea how to complete stop spam comment without uninstall K2.

In J3.1 from K2 Comments:
Parameters (top button bar)
Comments (menu line below button bar)
There one can enable comments only for registered users, or enable reCAPTCHA for the public.

Re: K2 Spam comments
First for Registration/Login user Joomla default system 3rd party login/register sometimes make issue.
Enable Captcha and only Register user can post comments. And disable comments auto published.
For user activation use self activation so user need valid email to register.

Re: K2 Spam comments
I had this problem at TheTruthLover.Org. My temporary solution is suggested above. I allow only registered site users to make comments. I would have to permit each comment but there haven't been any yet (still prepping content before I go truly public).
The registered site user method requires users to give you data they may not want to, and the extra effort of login to my site every session they want to comment. My plan is to allow comments via Disqus.com when I have the right Joomla extension setup.
Disqus.com is perhaps the best solution because of all it offers as a service. Disqus users need only login once via their first commenting link of any Disqus website their entire Internet session. Because other Disqus users may follow the comments of one, it is another way to bring visits to your website. One can do much the same with Facebook extensions, but Facebook lacks privacy which Disqus preserves.
I have seen Joomla sites using Disqus. Does anyone have comments on Disqus itself, or which extension works well with Disqus?
Thanks!

Re: K2 Spam comments
I just wanted to add to this post as there was a link to it from a hosting company email regarding k2 spam submissions (which led to them taking the site offline).
The latest k2 version has akismet support which is excellent at stopping spam.
So update to the latest k2 version, sign up for an akismet account (free), and then add your api key to your k2 settings.

Re: K2 Spam comments
I was thinking , why would be any spammer? the answer is because it's good for SEOers and which parts are important for them? it is web urls and keywords!
so we can improve anti-spamming by just removing url field from the comments.
I'll test it right now and let you know if any improvement take place.

Re: K2 Spam comments
I did that and I am waiting for the results. keep you posted.
also if make the text field somehow smart which detects any url text do not let it to be even submitted and also if we just oblige the commenter to approve his/her email for submission.

Re: K2 Spam comments
You will just end up with urls in the message body plus a load of nonsense messages.
Just turn on akismet and forget about it.

Re: K2 Spam comments
I have done a lot of modification on my k2 and if I update it to be integrated with aksimet i would have a lot of trouble doing them again.
I will use aksimet in future.

Oops ! it did not work. I think the spam bots have some kind of a wake up-sleep time.
Ok, what do you mean override?
thanks for your replies

Re: K2 Spam comments
never modify the core of an extension. Use a template override to achieve any modifications so that the extension can always be updated without losing your changes.

Re: K2 Spam comments
it is 2016 and I returned to this post again. I completely disabled K2 comment and installed a disqus plugin and used it 1 year. There were no spams and actually there were no comment at all !!
seems no one on my sites bothered using disqus and all my comments and my relation with my visitors stopped.
I am returning back to k2 comment with recaptcha this time. However, the recaptcha is not working with k2 comment despite working on my email system. These comments are headache.

Re: K2 Spam comments
If you still have the old recaptcha URL in your plugin then you seriously need to update your Joomla version to the latest.
