Yes, in Joomla those are called Extensions and available via http://extensions.joomla.org/

There are mainly 5 kinds of extensions: Components (determine the functionality on a page), Modules (in Wordpress they call this widget), Plugins (run in the background), Templates (in Wordpress called "Themes") and Language files (to translate system labels like "read more").

I used WP for years for no good reason, use only Joomla and all Joomla nowadays (mvc comes in handy too) and I'll never look back :)

Wordpress is much easier to set up and maintain. If you want a simple site or blog then Wordpress is it. It is also has a lot of SEO tools at its disposal. Learning curve on Joomla is higher but it is much more powerful. For complex sites Joomla is it. If a lot of users will be updating the site then you cannot beat Joomla user management.

I personally use Joomla to design my customers money sites and use Wordpress for blogs that support these sites.

Both will be just fine. It's all about what you prefer. To me wordpress was easier to start with but now I'm using Joomla just because it gives me more freedom to do what I want.

Joomla! is much more flexible, even if it has less plugins and modules. It's much better for social networking sites than Wordpress IMO.

I think both have their own unique features but your choice should depend on which of them can make feel more comfortable. Both are great for business websites but if you have a simple and personal blog, you can use wordpress to power it for you.

Honestly, I don't have any direct experience with Drupal. I have used WordPress and Joomla to create several websites. According to my personal experience, Joomla is not that easy that some users expect. As you may know Drupal is the most complicated program among the most popular CMSs. If the ease of use is important for you WordPress is your first choice, but you can't expect a website as professional as ones created by Drupal or Joomla.

There are some resources helping you have a right choice when choosing your needed CMS.

See the comparison chart of WordPress, Joomla and Drupal on
http://www.threehosts.com/wordpress-vs- ... rupal.html

There is also a useful article at
http://www.rackspace.com/knowledge_cent ... -wordpress

And you can find Pros and Cons of any of these programs on
https://www.udemy.com/blog/drupal-vs-jo ... -wordpress

You can also use demo account of WordPress, Joomla and Drupal via their official websites to see one of them is proper for you. My favorite program is Joomla. Joomla allows you to build a site with more content and structure flexibility than Wordpress offers, but still with fairly easy, intuitive usage.

I think Wordpress is def bigger at the moment. I have used Wordpress a lot, but I want to try an get into Joomla because I'm doing website design for clients and want more flexibility to be creative.

I suggest Joomla or Drupal for movie website, because they are more flexible when it comes to design and codes.

Why is that your opinion? WP has Buddypress while most of the good Joomla social networking extensions seem like they are paid.

Yes all these articles are subjective for any person/companies interest in their favourite cms. The only good test I have seen, pls post link if you have any other, is this one that really compare how easy it is to set up Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal for the contest of doing the same thing: http://www.cmswire.com/cms/web-cms/sxsw ... 004124.php

Everything else is just opinions mostly of people that dont have experience of all three systems or just favour one of them.... thats my opinion :D

How the Teams Compare

Here is a comparison of how the sites came together under deadline:
Drupal Joomla! WordPress
Total Hours 79.25 57.25 90.5
Hours spent on front end 21.75 15 36.5
HTML Validation No (8 errors) Yes No (8 errors)
CSS Validation No (7 errors) No (1 error) No (21 errors)
Page weight 180K 140K 154K
Lines of custom PHP/JS code 220 30 1,808

This is interesting, since I started with Wordpress and now I'm learning joomla, I'm looking more powerful CMS which support for ecommerce, since my job is creating ecommerce websites.

And I agree with Itoctopus who point out that WordPress is easier than Joomla. That is what I feel when I started it, but I'm still looking the powerful website and faster website. That makes me here now.

Interesting comparison @darb.

Just out of curiosity @TiffanyWatch why not develop on a dedicated ecommerce platform like osCommerce?

FYI. This event was initiated and set up planned by Palantir - a Drupal dev company that build support Drupal. http://www.palantir.net/node/89

So they stopped doing this ultimate showdown comparisons now and you can guess why of the results? :)

If this was in favour of Drupal you can be sure that this have been the continuously ultimate showdown test for the leading CMS! Even they tailored the test idea to fit Drupal and the Drupal dev team you can guess..?

Drupal Joomla! WordPress
Total Hours 79.25 57.25 90.5 - this is what you should consider about "easy to use" from a developer doing the same site.

You can try to use this master htaccess file if you have some experience guy that can help you. Its recommended for enhancing your security and it works for Joomla 3.3.+ too.. https://docs.joomla.org/Htaccess_exampl ... ecurity%29 or use Admin tool professional https://www.akeebabackup.com/products/admin-tools.html

In a technical standpoint wordpress's code is not as clean and object oriented as joomla. For me as a developer I don't like wordpress's code as much as joomla.
