Views on paid subscription renewal for code correction only

The scenario
You buy a 6 month subscription at $40 for an extension which seemingly works fine and you are quite satisfied.

8 months later and 2 months after your subscription has expired, you are notified by email that there has been a medium level coding correction for an error that occurs when using the extension within a specific component, and here is the link for the updated version. No new functions or added benefits have been done.

You click the link to download the corrected version and log in. You see no link to the download but instead a button to renew subscription at another $40 to get the corrected file. You contact the dev and they state that the only way to get the file is to purchase the minimum subscription.
