AFAIK, the mamboforge is controled by Miro.
I'm just curious, will the other 3PD still use it? Or it would be a new forge?

no need to rush  :)
btw have you considered to use the SMF simple downloads? not as flashy as the forge, but get the job done for small downloads

Thats not even closely powerful enough

We need something with advanced search, CVS, integrated forums, e-mail notifications, strong user groups, probably gallery, complete RSS system, fully featured  commenting system...etc. Somethign more powerful then G Forge script.

It is in fact a useful plug-in, but not good for this need. That's probably another reason why Mr. Rey is asking us to wait. A script like this will take time to find and set-up.

no problem there. a well written script, yet it seems that there are scripts more powerful and more robust and since the community is getting a re-launch, it would only make sense to improve in that area. For example the G Forge script has very limited Forum options, few issues with the CVS and didnt have an integrated gallery which could be a good idea to use for posting screenshots of the newly uploaded scripts.

I have to agree with the limited forum option, most time the ppl that need help is better of posting at the m4mboserver forum or the dev site.
Also, The gallery is a great addition to take a peek of the CMT before they installed it. I cant wait  ;D

I was reading about web applications the other day that were like sourceforge and worked with subversion.  I'll have to try and find that email and post the links.

I think you will find that GForge is a fork from sourceforge with a few things removed. When SF went closed source years ago, GForge picked up the slack. Its been cut back a bit (e.g. doesn't handle server farms as well, but you can always split everything up).

GForge handles forums, bug trackers, tasks, source control, user creation and a few other funky things like that. Its a pain to set up, but when properly set up, it will do the job more than adequately (especially if the underlying hardware can handle it). We don't need something more complicated as the forge actually did all that we need it too, but wasn't open for 3PD cvs (in fact the old forge cvs system was some what hacked, but nm that you can see the errors for yourself).

As a mamboforge beginner, I have to say I hated it :(

I'd like to see something far friendlier to use. Or maybe just something with better instructions.

Not least, with the forums, I would have thought that for low traffic forums, the default would be for there to be email notification to the project owner if anyone posted. I have waited in the past an age for a reply to a question and thought the developer was just crap at support. Having put a few of my components on mamboforge, I found I ended up with people probably thinking the same of me :(

As a punter looking for stuff, I find myself presented with loads of dialog tabs, largely empty of information for most modules and components, and as a developer I find I don't have the time to populate all of the tabs  ::)

Hi,

I have to agree, as a bod just looking for components, modules, etc I often found myself going around in circles looking for information.  I am not exactly without experience in computers and the internet but it took me about 6 months to become familiar with what I would find where - admittedly the 6 months figure included about 3 months where I wouldn't venture anywhere near - the reward wasn't worth the expenditure in time and effort.

If the forge - whatever it ends up being called - is intended as a repository that welcomes 'end users' in all their diversity then it needs to be far cleaner, far more intuitive and with some form of guidance on hand.  Obviously the developers using the forge will have their own criteria against which to gauge the software. I just think both sides need to be borne in mind in the selection process.  Not meaning to suggest for a moment that anyone had indicated otherwise, of course.

Just my tuppence.

Dean Marshall.

We were working (before) all this happened on a more 'directory' interface for people to search for things on the forge.

Which meant that it would be run separate to the forge, with a better more intuitive interface, but would pull its information from the forge and the forge would handle the actual repository aspect of things.

Once the new forge is in place, we will work on getting this completed as well.

Good news :) I hope I was not coming across as negative, as I know the efforts involved. But with a clean slate to some degree, it would be nice to see some old bugbears resolved.

For the second time in this thread I would just like to echo 'Jema' - and thank Rey for the feedback.

I have to agree with you on that.
