Hi all,
No-where seems to be the best place to ask this since it's not actually about 1.5.

Is there a release schedule for 1.6 anywhere?

Is there absolutely any kind of rough time frame for 1.6?
I understand if 1.6 is in planning then it may be very difficult to give a figure. Anything is better than nothing, even if the time frame slips (which I would expect ;)).

The charitable web site I have developed is in desperate need of ACLs. I can either put everything on hold for a short period if 1.6 doesn't look too long away, or look to the last resort - which is the JUGA extension.

Best regards

Joomla! 1.6 will be released when it's done :) Right now there isn't a single hint of when that may be for anyone.

If you need ACL, I suggest you look at joomsuite.com - they have some great J! 1.5 native ACL type extensions. JUGA may also be a alternative for you as well.

Thanks for the reply.
I won't assume it's going to be within the next six months!

I doubt it - it's possible you may see a beta in that time period, though. But I have absolutely no information to base that assumption on. It's merely a guess.

It has been ages since the last release. I do hope that for the next release (1.7 or whatever it is) there will be a quicker development process - i'm sure that the work the developers have been doing is great... just a shame the joomla community has to waste a year waiting for all that great work! ...really want to see the new user access stuff..

surely someone on the admin team can give a ballpark estimate for when 1.6 will be released.. june?

Versions < J1.6 are not 3rd NF yet.. and that cramps style right now. Joomla currently is as it does. :pop The DB schema should have been overhauled to 3NF straight after the mambo fork. I personally would prefer to see joomla shed all non-essential features, simplify, and get the db to 3NF... just move on. Hard decision for any project to make, but backward compatibility is ultimately worthless if it inevitably strangles the project's future.

If you wish to provide development input, make sure you post to the correct dev list, otherwise you inputs here may well go unnoticed but the people that need to notice it.

A good place to start is here:

http://developer.joomla.org/coordinator ... or-16.html

Look at the part titled "Revisiting the 1.6 Road Map". It's not so much a matter of "when" but how fast do those requirements get met. If you're impatient, do what you can to help devs tick those checkboxes. If you're not a programmer, ask them what you can supply (possibly money to hire another dev?).

Seriously spiking it is quite arrogant approach to us who work with Joomla for so long time.
I will start evaluation other option then Joomla. In this statement is lack of respect for developers work with Joomla. Definitely aly is a lack of professionalism in this statement.

It's look like someone try to squise as much money as is possible for most wanted module in Joomla

Everyone in the Joomla Community is waiting for 1.6 and the ACL feature. Jumping from the 1.5 base to 1.6 is a major version jump and implies that bigger and better features are on its way. With the implied promise comes a huge anticipation from the Joomla Community with all of us pounding on the table, "we want it now, we want it now!!". This is a lot of pressure on the developers to get 1.6 and the ACL done right. Therefore, we cannot blame the development team in taking their time to be sure that 1.6's first release is one that will rock the CMS world.

Like the saying goes, "good things come to those who wait" and wait patiently we will.

Lisc -

The ACL extension listed there is not offered by any of the developers working on Joomla! core. So, no reason to suggest that there is anything unethical going on in order to make more money.

In fact, Andrew Eddie -- arguably the primary developer for 1.6 - has an outstanding free (as in "no charge") extension called Content Manager that offers capabilities you might expect with content ACL in 1.6.

Again, Andrew is contributing a lot of code at no charge for Joomla! core. Again, Andrew is not charging for this extension *because* he wants people to have that capability now.

It's unfortunate to see people so suspicious of those who give so much.

For those looking for 1.6 release information, this morning, I shared links for those who are hoping to follow development information.

Hope that helps.
Amy

I personally would rather have a good product later than an incomplete or excessively buggy one NOW.

Thanks Joomla Dev team, keep up the good work!

I am certainly looking forward to the release of Joomla! 1.6. I hope the development team is taking their time to be sure that the first release of 1.6 is a great complete product.

I am particularly interested in the ACL and SEF features. Is there an overwiew of the new SEF features available?

I'm sure you've seen the latest blog posting: http://community.joomla.org/blogs/commu ... hereq.html

Its focus is on ACL. No mention of SEF.

Thanks for your swift reply, SFGolfer. I am very happy with the progress of the access control implementation. It is really a huge step forward for Joomla!.

I have searched the forum as well as Google to figure out the current status of SEF. There are lot of suggestions out there, but I didn't find any status report from the Joomla! team. I guess I have to wait and see.

Hi Trouble,

I need ACL the same way you do, but I am trying to figure out what ACL-component is best...

Juga, (commercial, no trail version)
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/2587/details

Ambra (commercial, from the same company as Juga, no trail version)
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/e-commerce/paid-access-and-content/7296

MightyPermission (free) or like drmmr763 suggested: If you need ACL, I suggest you look at joomsuite.com - they have some great J! 1.5 native ACL type extensions. JUGA may also be a alternative for you as well.
http://www.mightyextensions.com/joomla-components/permission-restrict-access

Community ACL for Joomla! 1.5 (commercial): http://www.corephp.com/community-acl/community-acl-for-joomla-1.5.html

What option did you choose? And, do you like that one?
Drmmr763: could you explain why you like joomsuite.com best?
Anybody???

Thanks very much.

Looks like Joomla team 1.6 has a problem with many thing and attitude
"
Joomla! 1.6 will be released when it's done ???
"
rise big ? Is it time to find other CMS or wait for more reasonably message?
ACL which should be implemented long time ago make current joommla really out of touch with
basic need. Waiting for unknown schedule and unknown result - well it is time to go a way form joomla, isn't it?

OK
"...you look at joomsuite.com - they have some great.."
Well it isn't perfect solution in contexts of upcoming 1.6 or further upgrades in terms of possible
pain with compatibility.

In summary - big pain big unknown and attitude - it is pity but looks like it is a time to take 2nd look at Joomla's team problems ?

Looks like they are not the only ones having an attitude problem. You are getting Joomla for free. Don't bite the hand that is feeding you!

Critism is allways appreciated. But there are a lot of ways to express yourself. Chearing one up, one gets more energy to achieve. The way you express yourself makes one lose energy. That's the last thing we need here.

Just a thought,

If Joomla 1.5.14 is working well, why pushing the Joomla developers to release the V1.6?

"Joomla! 1.6 will be released when it's done" It makes a lot of sense to me. Who wants an unstable version messing up your site?

There is an alpha version of Joomla 1.6 available for download on the Joomla Developer Site. It's packed with great new features and everybody can test it.
I'm pretty sure that the Joomla developers will release an stable V1.6 in the right time and manner.

That's a good one! What would they say to you? I don't know. I wouldn't even try to ask! They may laugh at you? :-)
