For those that need high speed and scalability at a low price, I've been really happy with Mediatemple.nets grid service so far. We have jomsocial installed on our site ( http://www.aghnation.com ) and at times have live video chats where we get a large influx of users. The grid hosting service is $20 per month initially and you have the ability to accomodate increases in traffic without loosing site speed.

Lovin it so far.

heh heh. Not to play devil's advocate or anything, but I gave them a try and am leaving. Out of the 5ish hosts I've worked with over the past 5 years, their reliability (though not support) has been the worst. Here's more on the subject:

Actually, I'm somewhat surprised to hear it's working well for you guys since so many people seem to have the speed issues. Glad to hear it though.

Do their servers come ready to host Joomla and especially Jomsocial (i.e. FFMPEG, FLVTOOL2, etc.), or is there alot of configuring/installing to do on the clients' part?

I never understood why somebody would pay so much for their services. I've heard great things, but HostGator works just fine for me, and I'm paying under 10 bucks a month.
