Hello,

Apologies if i have put this in the wrong section feel free to move it if you need to. Anyways i know that currently Joomla Supports the MySQL and MS SQL Database formats but i was wondering what the plans are for other databases. Whilst these databases are good, i think in the long run as sites grow in size there may be issues as you look at the technologies used for replication and the likes there are very high system requirements.

The database i am currently looking into is Hypertable, which is an open source equilivent of google bigtable. The beauty of this is that it works well on either a single machine or a large cluster. Where commodity hardware can be used which in turn allows for extra redundancy etc instead of needing a few fantastic servers.

Can anyone explain the database direction Joomla is heading in. I am not anti-mysql in any way. I just think in some cases when data gets large and there is not really a disk based clustering solution rather a memory based replication / clustering solution it may pose problems later on.

Has anyone heard of Hypertable or looking into it with Joomla as well?

Thanks for taking the time to have a chat. Cheers!

Am i taking the information in correctly with what you pointed me to?

Currently the dev team are working on the database abstraction so that in essence whatever database has its own coding file can be read by the abstraction level. So there is like a plugin for MySQL, or Oracle, or possibly in the future Hypertable?

I Think this would be fantastic if that was the case, allowing the expansion of Joomla even further the only limit being the files that allow Joomla to interface with the specific database, and in doing so it would allow for a greater choice of databases than is currently offered (Whilst acceptable in the future some may come into problems with this).

Cheers.

You are reading that post correctly, it should be possible in the future to connect to more DB types.
