Hi,

I am a Joomla user/developer and have a question. I have been using Artisteer for creating templates. Although it is a good product, it is quite expensive, especially if you only want to create 4/5 templates.

Now this gave me an idea to build an (proper) online template creation tool for Joomla, and maybe other Content Management Systems, but I would like to get some opinions on this:

1) Would you rather use a tool on your desktop or webbased?
2) Would you be willing to pay for templates, and if so how much
3) What would be for you a deal-breaker or convince you to use it (requirement-wise)

The idea is to have a free version (which create branded templates) and a paid version, with maybe more features (price I am thinking about is $2.99 per template).

Thanks!

This is a good idea.
1. I would rather use a desktop based tool than the web based one because it's performance is much faster. the Internet connection might interfere the performance.

2. Absolutely. Personally i won't mind paying for a template that will pass my liking. If it's great why not?

3. For one, the navigation would be a plus. Maybe if i'll get to test the beta or the free one and i find it convenient, i might use it.

Let me know about the developments.

Hi Kates,

thanks for you reply. The idea is to build it in Javascript or GWT (Google Web Toolkit), which means it will run mainly on the clientside, reducing the internet connection bottleneck.

I will definitely setup a beta, where the (full) tool can be used freely to get some good feedback. I will also try to keep this thread up to date with latest developments.

Does anybody else have some suggestions/feature requests?

Great idea! I'd love to see some prototype or beta! This is an awesome idea!

Thanks Josh, good to hear :D

(I hope this is allowed, and not considered spam, else I will remove it), but at http://www.template-builder.com/ you can already sign-up for the beta.

Hopefully next week we will be able to have some more information on the site and I would like to have some feature request/ranking implemented. We started development and doing this in Dojo (http://www.dojotoolkit.org/), to make sure it runs clientside.

I hope that we can start with the beta end of January.
