I am happy you like the Joomla.org template, but unfortunately it is unique and not available for others to use.  You can check out this link at the SMF.org site http://themes.simplemachines.org/  They have a number of themes available for use.

Can anyone at least tell us how the Joomla.org site seems to use a different template for the SMF forum?  I have a fluid 3 column layout for my site, but when the SMF forum displays in the center column only it is too small.  How can we make a different template for SMF that will display it like Joomla.org does, without the left and right columns that appear on most every other page?

First of all, all the subsites of joomla.org are separate installations of Joomla.

A solution for your problem would be to not display modules when SMF is opened in the appropriate slots and then remove them if there are no modules. Search for moscountmodules in this forum for this.
