Hey Mods,

I'm new to creating Joomla components and am trying to find sample code snippets.  Unless I download a component and sift through the whole thing there doesn't seem to be any place to go to to view specific code for a simple task.  e.g. using mosToolBar in the front end, getting PDF and Print icons in a component other than com_content, using class definition for posting new data to the database.

Is it possible to start a forum where people can post small snippets of code to help other people learn the basics?  Maybe one for components, one for modules and one for mambots?  The VB, C and php community have heaps of these sites around, I think people would find it usefull and therefore increase the speed people are able to create components.

What do you think?

Gedm.

Yes is nearly ready and should get some day on the dev.joomla.org site, but currently main focus is get Joomla! 1.5 ready and most of all get most of the docs ready, that is a huge bunch of work ;)

After this i guess it will be no prob to introduce those into the dev site.

The module section (if one is created) would be a good place for people to post the entire code for simple modules.  For example, instead of just posting a snippet a person could post a simple module in its entirety.  I have a "count-up" module on my site and I'd like to make it easier for other people to use it, but it's not worth posting this two small file solution on the forge.  Simple modules like that are well suited to this snippet section.

Upload feature for small code files ( but to big to post as snippet ) is planned for this Version.

Predator,

That's great news about 'nearly ready'.  Is it worth getting a basic one started in the forums where people can post them as a topic promoting discussion and therefore improvemts?

Yes.... I'm impatient.

I agree that it would be a great addition. As an example, the content parameters we now have control over - show/hide stuff, started out as a code snippet I posted over on the old system. It's a neat place to collect various snippets of code people have used to make their own personal modifications to the core, module hacks, component tweaks, etc.

It would be nice to have a topical outline like the PLEAC programming cookbook too:

http://pleac.sourceforge.net/pleac_php/index.html

I realize that Joomla! is an application, not a programming language, but when people learn how to use and customize content management systems there must a natural cookbookish way to organize it.
