What software mix is the best for my 1st windows web server?

Post by webdesignnet » Fri Sep 17, 2010 2:06 pm

Hi

Until now I have been renting a virtual server with GNU panel (open source).

I am hosting 30+ domains and have decided to buy a used server as times by times I have serious problems with the administrator/owner of the server I rent.

The thing I am sure about - it will have operating system Windows Server 2003 or 2008 and for 100% not Linux.

I understand that for professionals it sounds silly, but I consider myself a bright boy and I am sure that I will catch up quickly :)

Please share the information - ??? what software bundle is the best for a windows web server (50%+ will be Joomla sites)

I have bought above mentioned server HP ProLiant ML370 G3.. just yesterday :-[

My finances are very, very limited, so I am going the cheap way in the case of software.

1. Operational system will be Win Server 2003
2. Probably for panel I will use Baifox http://www.baifox.org that is free of charge.

Next month I will buy another server HP ProLiant ML370 G3 - the same as the existing one and it will be used as a secondary server in the case of problems of the server #1.

Question 1: what software do I have to have in addition in order to be able to provide a decent webhosting service for small individual websites?

Question 2: do I have to make a separate dns (domain?) server? Or is it, let us say domain.com and I don't have to worry about that? If yes, can it be ordinary pc or does it have to be a real server as well? .. and what software is needed for it? ... I have heard that they have to be separate one from other from http://www.[youtube].com/watch?v=qS-PzSG7qFY.

please help me :geek:

thank You in advance,
Helmuts
