According to Google analytics my website and forum receives between 2000 and 3000 hits per day. My kunena forum gets between 200 and 300 new posts a day.

I am with host Gator and they have given me some grief today, actually they have taken my site down. They reckon that my site is causing high load issues. Why this should happen today and not yesterday, or the day before that I really don't know. What I want to ask you guys is if I would benefit from going on a VPS considering the traffic I get, just wondering if shared hosting isn't beefy enough.

This really depends on how many clients they stick onto one server where your site is hosted on. Obviously the less the better as it means you get more of the resources. This is the same with either shared or VPS. So ask your hosting provider how many clients do they stick onto a server? it helps to know just how much resources are shared between each site.

From your stats, go with a VPS server and install memcache and APC to help cache your content and queries to improve performances. These are installed at the server level. However, if it is a managed VPS then you'll need to get your host to install it for you.

Cloud hosting might be a better choice as you can scale the resources as you grow.

I think dedicated server is expensive and can be a bit overkill for the traffic you have.

I'm really surprise they took your site down after a day notice. Usually a good host will let you have a bit of time to decide or perhaps offer some advice on caching your site.

Also, before you jump into upgrading your hosting package, turn on all caching on your joomla and see if that helps?

Since VPS prices went down you can get VPS server that will handle 10 times your load for under $10 a month, so in the end it all depends on your server administration skills. If you feel comfortable doing it - do it. It will save you all the hassle with shared hosting providers + you can adjust your environment the way you need it.

Rapidplugins mentioned scalability - it is safe to say that VPS is scalable enough for your site if youre currently on a shared hosting. Once your load will be bigger than the bigest VPS on the market can handle, migrating your website to something bigger will not be your main concern :)

I went on to a dedicated server in the end, expensive, yes it is, but what the hell, at least I have peace of mind now.
