I just wondered if it was common to sometimes lose almost days posts after moving from a shared hosting over to dedicated hosting? I have contacted my hosting company and am waiting to hear back, however somebody on here must have moved over from shared to dedicated at some stage, just wondered if this has ever happened to you?

How did you migrate the site to the new server? Where you involved or did your hosting provider handle everything?

Yes, the hosting company moved all my files. What is really really annoying is not only did I wake up yesterday to find well over 100 posts from the previous day completely gone, but it also happened today, but today probably around 200 posts have completely disappeared. I have been talking to them and they are looking into it, but this is not good and if it happens every day it's going to make things very bad on the forum.

I wonder if they forgot to re-direct the website to the new DB? Also, did they upgrade the forum extension before they upgraded the website?

I think the hosting company must be working on the website, because all of a sudden yesterday's post count jumped from something like 35 up to 183. Hopefully they will sort the problem out stop purging the majority of posts that are being made

Glad to hear you got it sorted Ironside, it's one thing to mess up your own projects; its an entirely different thing when someone or something out of your control starts messing with your code!

weird things are still happening. Somebody has reported a couple of posts in one thread, a friend of mine views the website on her computer and mobile phone, she can visit the thread perfectly okay from the mobile phone, but when she clicks on the exactly the same link on her computer, it takes hwer to a completely different thread altogether, work that one out?

It sounds like a DNS problem.
e.g. your domain oscarfishlover.com lists the following two Nameserver:
Code:
     ns1.pennwooding.com
     ns2.pennwooding.com

Both of those Nameservers return the IP:
Code:
oscarfishlover.com.     14400   IN      A       108.167.168.225

However, you also have DNS NS records and those list two different Nameservers:
Code:
oscarfishlover.com.     86400   IN      NS      ns1757.hostgator.com.
oscarfishlover.com.     86400   IN      NS      ns1758.hostgator.com.

And both of those nameservers return a different IP address:
Code:
oscarfishlover.com.     14400   IN      A       174.120.40.22

Which one is the correct IP 108.167.168.225 or 174.120.40.22?

Olaf

Good, I was hoping someone with a little bit more experience than myself would chime in with some useful information, going shopping now, but I will get back to you with some information a little bit later.

Mind you, when I checked the forum this morning, there were over 100 replies from yesterday, not quite as many as normal, but certainly not like what it's been for the last couple of days, so I'm hoping that maybe it may have sorted itself out. I'll get back to you later with some IP addresses and maybe you could help me work out which ones are current at the moment, thanks very much

The main servers should be:

ns1.pennwooding.com 184.173.19.18
ns2.pennwooding.com 108.167.168.224

Below are the name servers of my shared hosting which was what my websites were on

ns1757.hostgator.com.
ns1758.hostgator.com.

ok, try to change the DNS A record on your ns1757.hostgator.com account to point to 108.167.168.225.

And try to update the DNS NS records to point to
ns1.pennwooding.com
and
ns2.pennwooding.com

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. Are you saying that there is still a problem? The shared hosting should be completely empty of any thing now, I've moved all website onto my dedicated server and I did change all name servers on the domains located on the dedicated server

I have just checked on Whois and this is the information I found, the name servers and IP addresses looks okay, apart from 108.167.168.225, it actually should be 108.167.168.224

No, I say the 108.167.168.225 is correct, as the 108.167.168.224 is your name server.
So everything should be back to normal soon.

For the future, if you do switch Nameservers, make sure both (the old and the new) always show the same information. (and you might want to decrease the TTL values of the A records 24 hours before you want to change something)

This is so frustrating, we are still having problems on the forum. Thankfully, my members are absolutely fantastic and our making my life easier by trying to make light of what has happened. Basically, they are describing the situation as having two universes, or maybe a parallel universe. This means that I may make a post that somebody else can't see because they are on the other forum. That does sound confusing, but I'm wondering whether the forum that is still contained on shared hosting is still in use and people are still somehow gaining access to it, that's the only explanation I have

Yes, it can take a few days before the name server is changed everywhere.
As I said, you could try to login to your old control panel and set the DNS A record to 108.167.168.225

Kind Regards,
Olaf

I spoke to my domain registrar and they have checked the name servers and IP addresses and basically told me that everything looks fine, however I have received another e-mail containing this message today

Your hostname (pen.pennwooding.com) could not be resolved to an IP
address. This means that /etc/hosts is not set up correctly, and/or
there is no dns entry for pen.pennwooding.com. Please be sure that
the contents of /etc/hosts are configured correctly, and also that
there is a correct 'A' entry for the domain in the zone file.
Some or all of these problems can be caused by /etc/resolv.conf
being setup incorrectly. Please check that file if you believe
everything else is correct.
You may be able to automatically correct this problem by using the
'Add an A entry for your hostname' option under 'Dns Functions' in
your Web Host Manager.

This is really starting to do my head in. I just checked on Whois and it seemed that Oscarfishlover.com is still using the shared hosting IP address, however I have changed the IP addresses on the domain hosting
