Drop Down menu - what´s normal?

When using drop down menu what´s normal? That all the content on a site is to be found at the sub(drop down)-menus or that some content is to be found in the main menu of the drop down menu and other only at the drop downs?

Studies have shown that if it takes more than 3 clicks for a user to find what they are looking for, most become disinterested and move on to another website. This is a very important factor to take in to account when determining how many drop down menus to put on a page and what links should be included in those drop down menus.
