kding -

Thanks for sharing your perspective - it was very good and we appreciate you sharing!

I think this thread has just been one way for those of us absolutely and shamelessly thrilled with Joomla! (our FAVORITE toy) to go on and on about how much we love it with others who feel the same way.

That unabashed gushing might be what is perplexing to you. Frankly, in the 20+ years I have been in IT, I have not seen it, either!

Just give it a couple of months -- you'll very likely start a thread of your own suggesting we come up with TEN THINGS we love about Joomla!  And, we will all contribute to your new thread, as well!

Good luck! You'll have fun! Let us all know if you have questions!

LOL,

In 20 + years you've never met an Apple user?

Thanks for the sentiments all the same.

Don't kill me, but I don't like Macs. I feel powerless without my right-click! I think it's a left-brain thing...would LOVE to be creative and artsy like the mac people, but it's just not in me!

Well I'm off topic, I know. But during the tough times in the 90s, it was those gushing artsy types and their community spirit which kept Apple alive.  Fortunately Steve returned and, well, the rest is obvious.

There are some parallels with Joomla! — here it was community, the gushing ones too, who helped save a great project.

More power to you all.

Amy, you're right about the left/brain, right brain thinking. I'm amazed at those people who are blessed with the ability to use both equally powerfully.

It is the developers. God love 'em. Who knows why they do what they do?

The reasons why I am evaluating Joomla for my next project

1) Flexible Theming.
2) Good WYSIWYG Editor.

There is no point 3 :(

Sorry to put a downer, but these wins are big wins, and there are drawbacks. The main negatives are:
1) No ACL.
2) Article categoristaion too rigid.
3) Poor forum.

Nevertheless, it's still #2 on the list at the moment.

Hey gareth_w,

I just thought I would pass along a thread regarding enhancements to ACL  - http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... html

Also what do you mean by poor forum?  Do you mean the joomla.org forum, or do you mean Joomla! and forum integration in general?

While this forum (Simple Machines) is brilliant, it's not part of Joomla. If you go to the front page of http://www.joomla.org and do a search you won't get the forum posts. I'm also very worried about bridges and upgrades as it's not part of the core code. I realise you can't have everything, but there are other systems out there with much tighter integration. Admittedly, I've not had chance to give it a thorough test drive and install yet, but I have grave concerns about this being a weak link.

There is no SMF bridge or other connection software on the Joomla site, this is just the SMF product with a template that is the same as the Joomla template. If you want tighter integration, you can try out Joomlaboard. This forum is completely integrated into Joomla. This means the same user database, and templating done through Joomla.

1. It's free ( undermining Heinleins theory that anything free is worth what you pay for it)
2. It's ME ( or, more specifically, it's everything I envisioned my site could be....and worth the big bucks I paid for  someone to "design" me a site.....I found Joomla! on my cpanel....the rest is history)
3.  It's CommunitEEEE
( sorry, it's the compulsive poet in me)

I think I can sum it all up in one really good reason:

Joomla allows every single person that wants to, the ability to create any sort of web site they want to, from the simplest of pages to the most intricate and dynamic full blown corporate web presences.  It also allows every single one of us to be a part of a rich and dynamic community of people from all over the world, with unique perspectives and thought inspiring spirits.

It doesn't get much better than that.  :-*

Wow, that was eloquent. It pretty much says it the way I see it too. Thank you for that.

I know this sounds rhetorical when I say this, but Joomla is the best thing to happen on the planet for web designers everywhere, no more hard coding, no more HTML & Java back end nightmares, its an easy, fun, exciting tool to use, need I say more?

2. Ease of Use (Joomla is keeping me employed in a way!)
3. extensible (I'll be able to build what I want, how I want) WOOOHOO!

3 minutes I downloaded
3 minutes it was installed
3 minutes later, I'm typing this in a forum
in another 3 minutes when I'm done typing this, I'm going to catch my breath and wonder why I worked in vain to get XOOPS woefully installed which wasted 3 days of my life.
If I was a drinking man, I'd buy you guys 3 martinis or three finger tequilas.
This has got to be the premier best example of Open Source effort yet to be seen on the net!
...is this really free?...am I delusional?.....can this really be happening?......
If I was one to practice idolatory, I'd bow at your feet and chant ...joomla...three times....
But, instead; Thanks alot for awesome code and effort!

I guess I ought to buy a shirt or something. I feel like I'm cheating you guys out of something.

1. The power of enterprise CMS apps for small/medium-sized organisations

2. Always something new to do, to learn, to add to it

3. It's fun -- no matter what your development skill level
