Switch language

Post by corex » Tue Nov 06, 2007 6:35 am

Hi all.

Just a quick question. I can see that the language-support is much better in J1.5. But I thought that it was possible to switch language by clicking on a button/link. Now it seems that you need to be logged-in to set your language.

I have a site that need multiple languages and need them to switch by a flag in the template or in a module.
- Have I misunderstood something?
- What is possible?
- Do this module or possibility exist?

Before you write JoomFish or something like that. I do NOT have legacy-mode enabled and do not want to.

Hi liu.

I THINK following need to be examined - In backend, under Article Manager - open article. In the "Parameter - Advanced" there is a dropdown-box called "Content Language". There you can choose the languages you have installed in the system.

Let us see what your other topic gives -> http://forum.joomla.org/index.php?topic=231294.new#new

I also await Joomfish 2.0 which is aimed at J1.5.

Note: Your "another question" should have been a separate topic. :)

I'm confused about switching languages as well.  I've got the administrative functions in Spanish now for Spanish users but no way to switch the menu items to Spanish by clicking on a Spanish flag.  I'm supposing this is either going to require a kludgy workaround or Joomfish as with Joomla 1.0?

Do you want to build bi-lingual sites?

I built a bilingual demo site using J 1.5 - I just added double menus and content, then created a second template with the Spanish-only menus (I replaced the menu positions with new Spanish-only positions) - the Spanish template is called from the menu I have in both templates where the Spanish menu item links to the Spanish home page.  The only functional hitches are that my little English/Spanish switch sends the user to the language's home page and then on the Spanish, some items (like "Read more" or "Written by") are not in Spanish.  So Joomfish is really going to be the way to go for a real dual language site on J 1.5.

I don't think that extension does work with RC4 yet - my installation was throwing 404 errors.  Also, the plug-in does not work properly with SEF url's.

I have installed m17n on joomla 1.5.1 for 2 languages: English & Dutch. Then I added 2 menu items and set language to dutch. When logging in as user with language set to dutch it works fine but when I want to use the language module from m17n to select a language I got an 404 - Component not found error. What am I doing wrong?

I seem to have the same problem with m17n: the funny thing is that if I switch the default language with the Language manager everything works fine and I can easily see the site working fine in both languages, but if I try to switch from one to the other using the m17n language selector I get a 404, no matter which language I started in. Any idea on what I'm doing worng?

For joomla 1.5 and 1.5.1 M17n works fine for me .
There is only a problem when you are in legacy mode and you do'nt have SEF enable
in other case without legacy or whit legacy and SEO its works.

Its because the module was created for Joomla 1.5 native.

Jason the creator of the module is working on that problem

if you read french you can see this post

This is indeed the problem. When disabling legacy mode it works fine. Is there someone who can rewrite the AkoCleanBizz template to joomla 1.5 native? Price can be discussed.

today with M17n you can have legacy mode and you din't have to rewrite the template
if you active SEF in the global config

that's true but I still want to use AkoCleanBizz 1.5 native. I did most of the work only this line I cannot get to work:

<?php
if (file_exists($GLOBALS['mosConfig_absolute_path'].'/templates/akocleanbizz/images/main_header'.$Itemid.'.swf')) {
?>

someone a idea how to rewrite this.

A second problem I have with SEF on is that in my demo site when switching to English the user is redirected to the weblink page instead of home.
