Have some questions related to language codes used in Joomla

Post by bongobongo » Sat Feb 07, 2009 11:49 am

I see that for my installed english and norwegian the related codes are:

en-GB for english
nb-NO for Norwegian bokmaal

Where does joomla get these codes from (for the format above using xx-XX )?
Where can I find a list of all language codes currently supported by Joomla?

Is there anywhere within Joomla directory structure or in database any link between
a language code (in the format above) and related browser language codes?

Regards

Hi bongobongo,

The language naming convention in joomla! [xx-XX] is made of [iso639 language code]-[iso3166 country code]
More info about language packs here: http://docs.joomla.org/How_to_create_a_language_pack

Joomla! 1.5 actually support any language. To find currently available language packs from Joomla! Translation Teams you can visit this page:

In all the language packs the xml contain a list of locales of the given language, and will automatically chose the first one available at the server that host the website. The webpage will tell your browser that x site is presented in xx-XX language.

Thanks a lot for that reply.

Very informative!

One last question:

Do you know where I can get a list of all the xx-XX codes that Joomla uses today?

Is this the best I can use:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jtrans ... _order=asc

Or is there a list somewhere else that is better to use?

Regards

Its not that joomla use a predefined list. New language packs show up each week and its so to speak an ever growing list.

Maybe you could explain what you are trying to accomplish? :)

Sen is right... Each time I care to look I find a new Indian language... Same applies to others...
