hi my name is hurshal patel. I am 15 years old and I found out about GHOP through my AP Comp Sci teacher. My topic is: Create a tri-fold brochure entitled "How to contribute in an open source community" with ideas for new community members. Possible information resources: * Understanding Open Source Ecosystems - http://www.joomla.org/component/option, ... 105/p,363/ * Google Search - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ho ... tnG=Search Skills Needed * Good communication skills. * Creativity. * Good Public Relations Skills. * Good Open Office Writer and communication skills. Difficulty Simple. Work Product Attractive, correctly written white paper. Use Joomla! logo and color scheme. http://www.joomla.org/content/view/259/70/ Licensing Documentation written for this task must be made available under the Joomla! Electronic Documentation License. Extra Credit (Optional) Interview several people who contribute in the Joomla! project. Time Limit 2 weeks. My only question right now is waht you mean by "Documentation written for this task must be made available under the Joomla! Electronic Documentation License." Does that mean that one I complete it you can use this brochure anywhere you want? Thanks ![]() hpatel Claimed Nov 29 Due Dec 13 Google Task [me=AmyStephen]Changed subject slightly for sorting all threads to match against Google resource [/me]

Yes, that's basically what it means. There is a copy of the license at the google site in the wiki. |

Hi Hurshal, hpatel wrote: My only question right now is waht you mean by "Documentation written for this task must be made available under the Joomla! Electronic Documentation License." Does that mean that one I complete it you can use this brochure anywhere you want? You can read the full license text here: http://www.developer.joomla.org/wiki/JEDL and there is a FAQ on the license here: http://www.developer.joomla.org/wiki/JEDL/FAQ. In a nutshell the license is a means to ensure that documents intended to be used freely by everyone (free as in freedom), cannot have that usage restricted arbitrarily. So by publishing your document under the JEDL anyone is free to take a copy of your document and give (or even sell) copies to anyone else provided they give the recipients the same freedoms that they themselves were given. This is very much in the spirit of open source and if it sounds familiar it's because it is essentially the same philosophy behind the General Public License (GPL) under which Joomla! itself (and many, many other open source projects) is released. The license is called an electronic documentation license because it does not apply to printed documents and since you, as the original author, retain copyright on the document, if a publisher wanted to include your document in a book they would have to ask your permission first. Whether you grant such permission, deny it, or sell it for a fee, is entirely up to you. Regards, Chris. |

Yes two sided would be good. Do you mean a set format in terms of layout and logos? No. In terms of files, we would like *.odt or you could use Scribus. |

thanks for the tip, dan right now this is how the brochure is organized: Front page - logo and title folded inside page - a blurb, bullet points 1st inside page - what is open source? 2nd inside page - how do you contribute to an open source project? 3rd inside page - how do you contribute to Joomla!? back page - logo, website, other info I just want to know if this kind of a layout is ok, or if I need to rearrange things or include other information thanks, hpatel |

I think that is a fine layout. Now just polish your text and pay attention to composition. You should be fine. Good luck with the contest, Dan |

Good start! The inner Joomla! logo violates the standards. It should not be dulled in color or placed behind text or an object. What does open source mean? --> What is open source software? http://www.opensource.org/ --> http://www.opensource.org/osd Many projects, including Joomla! are --> Many projects, including Joomla!, are Higher quality products --> Higher quality Less bugs --> fewer bugs Hot-Tos and Tutorials --> Tutorials and FAQs I would add a section on conduct. How does a good open source citizen act? And, after "what is open source software?" and "why open source?" I would address the issue of "Why should you contribute?" If you choose to put your name on the brochure, it should be less pronounced. Maybe a "Written by" on the back panel in small font. As a reminder - this is due on Dec 13. Thanks! Amy

Looking good! Remove a single space in front of every item on the What is Joomla! list *except* personal webpages. remove the http:// values remove www. in front of joomla.org and opensource.org Change "and redistribute it for free" to "and distribute it" Confusing? Quote: Why Open Source? There are many open source projects, including Joomla!, because of its benefits: Maybe change the following to "Create a template to share with others" Quote: For Joomla!, you can suggest a new GUI theme to be created Lower case "should:" Quote: Why Should you Contribute? I would work on the wording of this. Quote: Why Should you Contribute? When the program you are running is not up to standards, has many bugs, or there is just something missing, it needs to be fixed. To help improve the program, you should mention it so it can be fixed, or fix it yourself for the benefit of all users. Something like this? Quote: An open source community has available only that which members contribute. It's important to also give something back. Doing so provides benefit to others and allows you to become a part of the project. ettiquette --> etiquette Excellent list of conduct. Needs a little more pizazz on the inside. Getting close! Thanks! Amy

Missing a c - in create Quote: For Joomla!, you can reate a template to share with others remove http://www. Quote: http://www.opensource.org/osd If you could add a bit of graphics to the second page - without any images - that might be nice. This is a very good piece. It gets the important issues across. It is well designed. If you make the two fixed I indicated, above, I accept this task as complete. We need one more judge to agree. Then, we will mark this thread "solved." When you post this work at Google, we will close that task and you will be free to select another, if you want. Thank you for your contributions to the Joomla! and Open Source Communities! You have been a real pleasure to work with. Amy

I like your brochure! You really explained what open source is well. Quote: Make sure you don't repeat questions or comments Ouch! I feel guilty now! Quote: Create your own Joomla! extension or feature You might want to say it more broadly so it applies to all open-source applications, such as, "Create an extension for programs like Joomla!" or "Create an extension or plugin to a program". Even if you don't change the sentence, it will still be a great brochure. Just make sure you add the c to create! The only other thing I should add is that it runs over to three pages on my computer, so you will want to make sure there is a pdf available as well as the odt. |

thanks, amy and trombonechamp im new to open office, so i am having trouble using it. As of now, i have changed the two mistakes, and i have 2 trifold variations. the only difference between them is that one of them has the reference Quote: The full definition is available at the Open Source Initiative's website: opensource.org/osd in a text box, instead of as a paragraph. i know its not much, but it the only change i could make. please tell me which one works better! the original design http://rapidshare.com/files/76205647/trifold_original.zip.html with textbox the change http://rapidshare.com/files/76205882/trifold_textbox.zip.html thanks for all the help hpatel |

That tri-fold looks great! I like the box better - but (you are going to hate me!) - the link is wrong - it should be --> opensource.org/docs/osd So, better stick with the no box version. I'll try to get another judge to look at this. I think it's good! You have been such a pleasure to work with - you have considered everyone's comments and integrated these ideas into your work. This will be a great resource for those who are new to open source, and providing context is helpful to people as they get started. Thank you very much. I accept this as complete. When a second judge indicates the same, we will mark this thread as complete, you can post on Google, then we will close the task there, and you will be free to select another task, if you choose. Thank you for your contributions to the Joomla! community! Amy
