021 - Introduce at least 3 new end users to the Joomla! Back end for Managers...

Post by Ashton_Murphy » Mon Dec 17, 2007 11:13 pm

Heya! :)

This is my second Task in the GHOPC, and I have chosen another Usability Testing task, but through the BackEnd Management.

Introduce at least 3 new end users to the Joomla! Back end for Managers and write a report on what happens.

    * 4 Work Product
    * 5 Extra Credit (optional)

Description

This task involves user interface research. The goal of the task is to
identify areas in where users make errors or are confused. The report from
this research can then be used by developers to improve the user interface
in future versions of Joomla!.

For this task you will work with three people who have never used Joomla!
before.

Using a Joomla! 1.5 site with one of the default templates and no
modifications have users attempt tasks such as:

  1. Creating an article;
  2. Editing an article;
  3. Creating sections and categories;
  4. Using the contact component.

You can add additional tasks that you think will be useful.
Skills Needed

  1. Knowledge of Joomla!
  2. Good observational skills

Difficulty

Basic
Work Product

A report describing your research process and what you learned about
strengths and weaknesses of the Joomla! user interface.
Extra Credit (optional)

1. Expand your research to more than three users.

2. Develop specific suggestions to address issues that you identify.
Although, I was just wondering, would it be better to format it a different way, rather than just use the same formatting as the other usability test? It may make it more interesting.

Anyway, thank you for having me, and hope to talk to you all soon. :)

Thanks a lot for your involvement ;)

Well, it is a question of goals, then I guess the presentation could be done in the format that better fits your purposes. However take in mind that your test is going to be used to extract valuable information. In other words and in my humble opinion: it will be more interesting if it serves to the main goals better.

And now, go for it!

Okay, sounds great :D Thank you!
I'll try and put everything a different way and present the information differently.
Thank you! :D

It was just a suggestion.

Take in mind this phrase:
The report from
this research can then be used by developers to improve the user interface
in future versions of Joomla!.
They are your "customers". Think as them. Think that you are hired to improve the Joomla! user interface. Ask. Review usability issues, get a big picture. That's what I'd do.

Thanks, Ashton, for taking a second task. I look forward to viewing this Usability Study, as well. Your last one was very interesting.

Talk to you later,
Amy :)

I'm really sorry. NeoOffice crashed or something. Lost the most recent documents. Recovery got it back, but it was completely blank.
Going to try and rewrite it as soon as possible.
Sorry again :/

Almost finished now. It took a lot longer than I thought. I had to redo the test.. and couldn't really do it with the same people. Two of the 6 couldn't do it anyway, so had to find new people.
Sorry, should have kept you up to date.
Sorry again, and I guarantee it'll be in within the next 24 hours from now.

Ashton -

Thank you so very much for coming back and repeating that testing for us. I  uploaded your results to http://JoomlaPlace.org/GHOP/google_task_21.odt - we are out of space at Google. And, I closed your Google task after posting that link.

We appreciate your contributions to the community we share and hope to see you continue with us - at least pop by from time to time.

Thanks much!
Amy :)
