118 - Create art that captures the spirit of All Together, As a Whole

Post by slogen123 » Thu Jan 03, 2008 5:59 pm

From Google:
Create art that captures the spirit of All Together, As a Whole

Learn about Joomla! and it's diverse international community. Consider what
the name Joomla! represents. Visit many Joomla! websites. Using this
background information, create art that captures the spirit of what "All
Together, As a Whole" can mean if a community works together.
This will definitely be a fun task, allowing me to be a little more creative and out-of-the-box than documentation. A few questions to clear up some ambiguities with the prompt:

1. What are we considering to be art? (yeah, i know we could write a book about that) Basically, a 2-D rendering of an image, or can we spread on to other forms of media e.g. flash, typography?
2. I will probably produce the artwork in Illustrator so that it can be resized as needed as a vector. Is that cool?

I look forward to everyone's commentary

There are no limits on you. You are the artist!

Look through the other art thread, though. You'll see some good discussion on culture and also the need to comply with the logo guidelines. And, of course, the more you are able to share your art, the more discussion you will build, the more of the community spirit you will integrate into your work.

These are really fun projects and seem to build a bit of excitement for all of us participating.

I cannot wait to see what you do. Thanks for taking this task!
Amy :)

Edit - Added URL for other art thread. :)

Ok, I have managed to create two seperate pieces as some rough ideas. Let me know what you guys think (i can happily go back to the drawing board if you wish).

EDIT: yeah, so Illustrator exported them a bit big, so here are the direct links to the files for you to view in your browser

I didn't see the links to the images, so, please forgive the double-post.

Not to steer things in one direction (please!), but I really like this one. It certainly expresses the strength of Joomla! to meet so many different needs.

hello again slogen,

just something to think about, have you considered working in a medium other than digital?

i was looking at your first image, as well as your second, and i thought it could be very interesting to get the long text string from image 1, but with the circular motion from image 2.

and then i considered the joomla colours, and what they signify. perhaps introducing some colour and creating the designs on paper could lead to some interesting results?

just a thought...

Thanks for all the feedback guys and sorry for a delay in posting. Basically the idea of design 2 was to take the ideas from design 1 and put it into a sort of rough flow chart. I'm thinking of two options at this point to continue on. I want to develop both for a bit now and then possibly have a poll for the final result. I'll go ahead and mess around with making the text circular for image one, and maybe do the second on paper and really roughen it up then use illustrator to live trace it. Expect new drafts in the next few days

Slogen?

It's really important to work with the community on these pieces. Will you have time to interact with us over the last couple of weeks of the contest?

Look forward to hearing from you!
Amy :)

Slogan -

This is the last week. We need to hear from you in the next day, or two, to have any time to work, at all.

Thanks!
Amy :)

I do like that. I need to advise you of the Logo Guidelines, though, as I did another contestant. I think the black background with the words is fine. There is a rule against using the logo on a busy background, but, given the subtle difference in color, I don't think it is too busy.

But I don't think the white with the words is in compliance. I believe that needs to be white, or the solid J! colors. What if you made it completely white? That might just make the logo "pop" even more.

Again, I do like the concept. Will be good to hear other opinions, especially the artist point of you with your mentor.

Thanks!
Amy :)

I like the design also. But I would also really love to see your designs take a step further, and try removing it from the digital world for a moment.

Have you given any thought to this slogen?

Doesn't mean we can't complete it though :) It won't count with Google, but it would still be pretty cool to see!
