This is such a common request. Right now the way to do what you want is to drop using the list of categories generated by the section menu link and use a module such as ghop categories which gives you the option of list of blog for your links.

On the dev list there has been a discussion of possibly introducing category parameters, and I think many, many web masters would like to see a list/blog parameter.

From what I have been able to tell (and I have had many discussions with dev team members about this) it is not possible to achieve this with a template override.

going back to masterchief's initial reply to the original post, I'm wondering if anyone can clarify exactly what the "layout override system" is? How do I use it? Where do I find it? It sounds like just what I need, but I don't know how/where to use it.

I'm just wondering what shortcoming you are finding with the layout override system we have that you need more flexibility? In the layout override you can give everything your own class, change the structure - whatever you want.

thanks!

Also the beez template has many examples of overrides.

the override system is very good but please let's avoid to think of that as the only solution. It's useful but it's wise to develop joomla core too...

How about having a parameter in the menu item of a link to the frontpage where to specify section or category from which the tagged as frontpage articles to be displayed? Of course by default this should be "all sections".

This could be a half solution as you can not select exactly which articles to be displayed where, however a very easy one.

The result of this will be the chance to have a menu item to all frontpage items, but from specific category or section. I think prior to having a node system, this is a very powerful and at the same time easy implementation ;)

And it will cost just 2 additional WHERE clauses in the SQL statements :P

i still can't see an answer to the original post on this thread 'Users cannot alter how Articles appear on the Front Page.'.. could someone point me in the right direction?

I need articles on the frontpage to be styled differently, and so that the client can do it themselves too..

thanks
