I am having major problems getting a site to be SEF and also using the Apache rewrite. I have done this with many sites and it has always worked. However, if it turn on just the SEF setting it get the following error. Any ideas?

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, support@supportwebsite.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Apache/1.3.33 Server at greenstarenergyhomes.com Port 80

If I turn on both the SEF and Apache rewrite I get the same error as above. However, if I just turn on the Apache rewrite, the site works but of course I still have the long addresses. I made sure that I do have a .htaccess file in the directory, but I am not sure what the file permissions should be set to. Could that be causing all of the problems. I did try having both a htaccess.txt and a .htaccess file in the directory, but that does not work either. Does anyone have a solution for this? Or has someone else had this same problem and has found a solution for it?

ask your host if apache_rewrite is available. it might not be.

It is available. I host several other websites there. (Godaddy.com).Another, thing that I thought might be causing the problem, but I am not sure, is that the site does not reside in the root directory. It is in sub-directory of the root. The sub-directory also has a space in the name like: Green star

Could that be causing the problem?

I took this site over from another designer, because the owner was unhappy with his/her work.

space might be a problem. also, it's probably better to create a sub domain for that folder. that way everything will run in root of site.

But you should be able to have it in a sub folder as long as your paths and live_site are correct in configuration.php

What if it is already a sub-domain? Also, I checked the configuration.php file and all of the paths are correct. I have even tried some of the suggestions on this forum like: uncommenting the "Rewritebase" line and adding the directory name. That doesn't work either, the entire site goes down.

Do you have the subdomain in the $live_site variable in config file; eg var $live_site = new.mydomain.com

Ok, it took me a while but I figured it out. I had to comment the Options +FollowSymLinks part and had to uncomment the "Rewritebase" line and now everything works just fine. Thanks everyone for all of your help.
