Is it necessary to have SEF Estensions?

Post by unixsus » Sat Sep 27, 2008 4:55 pm

Hi Guys
I wonder if its really necessary to install extra SEF extensions? I see Joomla 1.5.7 itself privide this function when you enable SEF friendly URL etc and rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess. So why any extra entension?

I will be thankful for your opinions?
Thank you

Hi unixsus,

No SEF - joomla.org/index.php?content=123&view=123&item=123&id=123
SEF - joomla.org/index.php?content123/view123/item123/id/123

SEF extension - joomla.org/beautifulfolder/beautifulfile.html

Cheers

I personally find the SEF in 1.5.x just fine. Take a look at www.joomla.org , http://community.joomla.org and http://developer.joomla.org to see standard SEF in 1.5 in action.

If you use the alias field under the Article title, you can get the following without SEF extensions:
(working with the examples you provided... )
joomla.org/beautifulfolder/beautifulfile.html
joomla.org/beautifulfolder/beautifulfile

If you do decide to try a SEF URL extension, I suggest sh404SEF. Top notch extension, that one.

SEF URL's aside, I find the Joomla SEO patch available here to be quite handy.

I also recommend following the Joomla SEO blog for good SEO advice and general Joomla tips and tricks.

Hey GollumX,

thanks for your reply. Thanks for your factoid about Alias - I'd never heard of that one before.

Will the folder names (sections/Categories?) be automagically appended to your alias or do you need to put in the whole path?

Cheers

Hi PavlovaPete,

If I recall correctly the Category name gets added on automatically, but not the Section name.
