Hi,

I made a component to my site and I am a newbie programmer(not even a one), and didn't know how to use BreadCrumbs with my component so I made my own module what it does job of BreadCrumbs does.

It has been told to me that BreadCrumbs are important for SEO right?

Anyway, do you think my BreadCrumbs module would work on SEO, like the Jommla!'s does?

Thanks

BreadCrumbs are basically a list of links and it shows the user the some kind of trail:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breadcrumb ... igation%29

If there is some kind of benefit in terms of seo, then it is probably that the user is not lost in a big site, and that it is easier to navigate, and therefore links more likely to that page.

In terms of reading that page by a robot, there is most likely no difference between the breadcrums links and other links on your page.

It might give you some category keywords on the page as well. But those are most likely to have less effect on your ranking then e.g. writing content that everybody wants to read, because it is good.

Mod Note: Moved to SEO Forum.

Breadcrumb is important and good for Seo. It not only supports Seo but also users.
User can come back the previous topic or home easily without click Back button on Browser.

Pretty good question.

IMHO, it think it depends. If the breadcrumb has keyword phrases in it, then it will help to boost on-page keyword density which does have a positive influence on rankings (all else being equal). But if the breadcrumb does not have the keyword phrase in it, adding breadcrumbs may have just the opposite affect (all be it minor).

There is another SEO benefit from breadcrumbs (all be it small). Preceding pages in the breadcrumb are typically links. Again, if these links have anchor text that is a keyword for preceding pages, it will build some internal link reputation for those pages. If the keyword's are not very competitive, adding a breadcrumb could make some noticeable difference.

As far as usability. Breadcrumbs are better when using complex menu structures. For example, using a 3 or 4 level top drop menu can create some pretty deep pages. Breadcrumbs can be a real benefit for users in this case. But be sure to have the breadcrumb / top menu in a location that does not cause the drop menu to drop over the breadcrumb.

On the other hand, a simple top menu with unique side menus that are always visible with "active" class formatting does the job that breadcrumbs do. The user can always tell what page they are on by looking at the menu item with the "active" class format.

But why do you want to build your own breadcrumb extension? Implementing the Joomla breadcrumb module has always worked for me just fine.

Thanks...

I think it was the colleague above who asked about the custom breadcrumb extension. I'm just interested in knowing if it's worth incorporating for SEO since we presently don't use it.

Hi djohnson1215,

Thanks for the informative post. First time I get to know the importance of BreadCrumbs as point of view SEO.

I think they are very usefull on top of the page. As you would probably link to the pages in the breadcrumbs in another way if you wouldn't have the breadcrumbs, it doesn't really matter for your linking structure. Haven't seen any evidence or experience that links in breadcrumbs are less valuable because they are in the breadcrumb.
