How to create XML sitemap for joomla website?

There are many components now for Joomla that do XML sitemaps, you also might want to consider doing a Video site map if you have video and also having an RSS feed for all content. Also there are accompanying tags that you can use in your head that specify the where-abouts of each of these items.

One last thing, many of the search engines now support auto-discovery of sitemaps if you add it to your robots.txt.

I use Xmap too. It is unbeatable.

I use the sitemap link for Search Engine that it generate and submit to Google through Good Webmaster Tool.

Additionally, I use the Free online Sitemap Builder below to generate my sitemap.xml file that I also submit to Google using the same Google Webmaster Tool.

If you're using XMap, make sure you check the Additional XMap extensions, because there is available a lot of plugins for the most popular components

A sitemap is a collection of hyperlinks that outlines and defines the website's overall structure.Generating a manual sitemap is not even an option for medium to large websites. There are many free online sitemap generators, but most of them limit the number of urls parsed to a small number, which is really not useful.

I ever use this (online sitemap generators), it's good tool but have limit the number of urls. So if you have a large website (URL / content), you must pay.

I think the easy and simple way is use extension, personally I use XMap

xml-sitemaps.com is quite useless for Joomla websites because it generates tons of unwanted URLs in the sitemap.xml file.
Instead you may look at this one (http://www.web-site-map.com/joomla-sitemap.php). In addition its free page limit is pretty high.

Yes, you could try XMAP but you need extension for your installed components, if you dont have, the xmap wont generate your component content

No issue.. U can simply create the Xml sitemap for the website from the XML sitemap creater (search in google),. and then upload the file in your website's webmaster tool.

I am wondering how important the priority is, and whether it impacts one's SEO if one has multiple xmlmaps in robots.txt with the same URLs?

Has anyone else run into an issue with larger sitemaps?

Currently, I have 800+ articles in a category with a menu item linked to it, BUT osMAP only generates maybe half (350) urls.

is this an issue/limit with the generator? or is it a joomla limit?

Login to the Admin Dashboard for Joomla 3.
In the main menu, click Components, then Xmap.
Click the New button.
On the next screen, enter a name for sitemap in the Title field, and change the Status to Published. Make sure the Access setting is set to Public.
Select the Menus tab. Click the check box next to the menus you want included in the sitemap.
The other fields are not required, click the Save button when you are finished. You will then see a message stating "Item successfully saved."
