Looking for some answers

Post by tlegens » Sat Oct 31, 2009 3:10 am

I am losing my patience with Google and other search engines with regards to my website. I have tried for the last several weeks to improve my ranking but I continue to lose indexed pages and I hardly ever turn up in a keyword search other than my company name. Would someone please take a look at my site and let me know what I am doing wrong?

There are so many lessons out there on SEO and I have tried to follow each of them but there is alot of conflicting info. Any help would be appreciated.

Your sitemap is 404: http://www.tldesignco.com/site-map

You should also try to create more unique titles and meta descriptions for your site.

Have you tried submitting your site to Google Webmaster Tools? The diagnostics there can give you some clues:
www.google.com/webmasters/

Your title tags appear spammy! It's WAY too long:
<title>St Louis web design for new website development and website redesign, web hosting, domain names, marketing tools, shopping carts, content management systems in the St. Louis and surrounding areas</title>
You have multiple H1 tags on your page.

Your page does not validate:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http% ... ne&group=0

Try to add more content to your site.

These are some of the things I found by quickly scanning your page. I'm sure there's more to be found, but this is what I had time for ;)

Good luck!

I agree, that page title does look like it could read SPAM. My sitemap actually uses the .xml extension (www.tldesignco.com/sitemap.xml) so you probably didn't add that when you looked for it. I am using webmaster tools, that is how I knew I did have 40+ indexed pages. I am now down to 6. The only change that I had made was about a week ago I changed to SEF using the page extension i.e. .html, .php etc. I am sure that could have something to do with it but it has been such a gradual decrease I don't really think it is.

With regards to the multiple <h1> headings, I am not sure how to cut that down other than to make my article headdings <h2>? What are your thoughts on that.

Great feedback by the way. Thank you!

For new sites, it will last 2-3 months in sandbox.

I think you have identified the problem, or at least one of them. I only have 6 out of my 59 site links in my sitemap indexed. Those other pages are old pages that I need to have google remove.

It will take some time, but Google will reindex your site.

You can use Removal URL feature on Google webmaster page.
This is better way for remove old page more quickly
