Hi

I hope someone can help. I've searched everywhere and it seems the solution to my problem is to turn off SEF urls. I don't want to do this!

I have followed all the steps and guidelines shown in similar posts, but I can't find a solution. All my SEF urls work correctly, except the menulink aliases. It creates a link that ends in /index.php?Itemid=64&option= which produces a 404.

I'm using the core Joomla SEF. Mod_rewrite is on, htaccess.txt is renamed to .htaccess. It's only the aliases that are not working, all other links are fine. I'm using Joomla 1.5.15 with legacy mode turned on.

Is there a solution that I'm missing?
Please help!

Thanks.

RextheRunt: did this ever get resolved? I am experiencing the exact same problem after moving to a new server.

It sounds like you've searched a lot on the forum, but I'm still holding out for some sort of solution.

I am having this problem too. It makes it more cumbersome when I can't use those alias links. I'm just posting here so I'll be notified in case somebody comes up with a solution.

I'm having this problem now too on a new site I'm building with Joomla 1.5.22. Never had the problem before... Hopefully someone can figure it out :)

Had the same problem. Everything was working fine with the alias "consulting" on a Article >> Article Layout menu item. Replaced this menu item with a new one directing to a new article. Suddenly, got 404 no matter what I did.

In my case, it was two menu items using the same alias, one which was a Article >> Article Layout type and another that was a URL type to the first one (in a different menu). Changing the alias on the URL type worked.

I advise you check all your menus for items with the same alias.

I've found that if I move the menu item to another menu on the site it works. However, moving it back to the menu I need it in, breaks it again.

Hi. I think I have a similar problem.
When I enable Search Engine Friendly URLs in SEO Settings of Global configuration I get the following error page:

Quote:
404 - Component not found
You may not be able to visit this page because of:
1. an out-of-date bookmark/favourite
2. a search engine that has an out-of-date listing for this site
3. a mistyped address
4. you have no access to this page
5. The requested resource was not found.
6. An error has occurred while processing your request.
Please try one of the following pages:
http://www.pirsol.gr/index.php?option=c ... 22&lang=el
If difficulties persist, please contact the System Administrator of this site.
Component not found

The link before enable SEF URLS the link is
http://www.pirsol.gr/index.php?option=c ... 22&lang=el

After enabling the SEF URL the link is (as it is using the ALIAS of the menu item)

http://www.pirsol.gr/index.php/el/contact-us

This happens with the menu items (ofcourse except homepage which is www.pirsol.gr)

I have renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess (as everyone)
I am using Joomla 1.5.14
I am using Linux Host

I don't know If you need additional information.
Any tips would be really helpful, otherwise I'll keep an eye on this thread..

**I have disabled SEF URLs for the moment

Thanks

Hi Pagap,

I'm not sure why you're getting the 404 error, but you should definitely upgrade to Joomla 1.5.22. That may fix your problem right away. You can easily do the upgrade using the "Update Manager for Joomla" component:

Cheers,
Chris

cclay Thank you very much for the response. I upgraded to 1.5.22 (I should do this long time before anyway) but the problem remains.
Anyway I will wait for a response in case someone figures out.

**Is there a possibility that its a template error? I am using Versatility4

Hi,

I got the same problem with Joomla 1.5.22.

The menu item thats points to the alias has ID 267
It points to Item 301 with link index.php?Itemid=301
When, on the frontpage, I hover over the menu thats uses the alias i see the link: URL/index.php?Itemid=301&option=

I dont know how it should look but shouldn't it point to 301?

This is the exact same issue I'm having (I'm using Joomla 1.5.23). Did anyone figure out how to solve it?

A bit more info. I have Kuena 1.6.5 which creates its own menu items, the main one being 'Forum' and I set its alias name to read 'forum' (instead of its default value which was 'kuenaforum').

In my main_menu I created an alias/menulink pointing to the Forum menu item I just mentioned. I also set the 'alias' value of my new menu item to match the kuena forum menu item (this is, I set it to 'forum') as instructed in the Kuena documentation to set up menu items.

The result is that in the frontend the new alias/menulink in the toplevel menu instead of simply pointing to the forum menu, it points to an invalid URL (with its Itemid pointing to my alias/menulink id and its 'option' parameter set to nothing):
URL/index.php?Itemid=105&option=

Any help on how to fix this would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Carlos

Still having this error after each update (now J1.5.25) and haven't found a long-term solution.

Most of the time, this problem occurs on my top drop-down menu.

Yes, this is true for me as well. If I don't want to create a copy of the the menu item, the best workaround has been to switch the menu links. In other words, I move the original (real) menu item to the new menu on which I've tried unsuccessfully to use the menulink (alias), then put/create the alias in the old menu placement. That often works for me; I hope it works for others.

I've had this alias breaking issue for some time, as well. My work around is to give the alias a unique name (adding a '1' or '2' at the end of the alias) and that seems to satisfy the SEF (and yes, shutting off SEF in the configuration makes the problem go away, though cleaning the Cache Admin does nothing). The only problem with the work around solution is that is skews our statistics. For example, recently, I had to rebuild the home page. The only way to get the alias to work again for "home" was to add a "2" to the end of the alias name, like this: home2, however, now the stats are broken between two homes. I've applied this work around for the aliases to many links and now my website stats are difficult to manage. I've been searching for a better solution, hoping to find a way to reset the SEF for the site but have found nothing. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I've found all of these issues have disappeared for me in Joomla 2.5.

interesting but rather than do a major upgrade, we are thinking about moving to drupal. in the meantime, i'm investigating the .htaccess. perhaps the RewriteBase needs upgrading or the .htaccess would be better served at the root (about the website directory)??

all of my upgrades have been pretty smooth so far... much easier than re-engineering a site on a completely different platform - whatever it is...
