Improving Google Page Rank and SEO

Post by SouthgateMaya » Wed Dec 29, 2010 11:19 pm

My website is http://www.southgatecoins.com I am looking to improve my SEO and achieve a higher Google page rank. I have already implemented all the suggestions offered in Google’s SEO Guide.

I would like someone to take a look at my site, its structure, its function, its code, etc., and provide suggestions for how to improve search engine optimization. I do not want to participate in PPC campaigns, but prefer to work on the site myself to achieve organic search results.

Here is what I have done so far:
1. Restructured menus and categories for the ecommerce portion of my website to allow easier access to products (both for users and for bots)
2. Added all shopping categories into expanding dropdown menus based on the site’s main horizontal navigation that appears on each page
3. Provided an xml sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools
4. Provided an html sitemap on my website for users
5. Implemented AceSEF to create keyword-based URLs
6. Implemented Breadcrumbs
7. Redirected all https search results to go to http pages

Here is what I am currently working on:
1. Going through each page of the website and configuring meta titles, meta descriptions, and meta keywords so that they are unique. (I understand that Google does not focus on keywords, but if I’m already editing the metadata, I might as well include keywords.)
2. Adding Alt tags to all images
3. Constantly posting new content, whether it’s blogs, or new items in the ecommerce section.

Here are the current stats for my website on Google Webmaster Tools:
Crawl Errors:
In Sitemaps ‎(169)‎
Not followed ‎(1)‎
Not found ‎(809)‎
Restricted by robots.txt ‎(7)‎
Unreachable ‎(2)

Crawl Stats:
High: 3,422
Average: 488
Low: 46*
*The low score is from when we unknowingly lost our Google site verification for 3 months. So, when we hit March, these low scores will drop off, and our average will be more accurate.

HTML Suggestions
Duplicate meta descriptions 93
Short meta descriptions 38
Missing title tags 1
Duplicate title tags 87

I would like someone to take a look at my site, its structure, its function, its code, etc., and provide suggestions for how to improve search engine optimization. I do not want to participate in PPC campaigns, but prefer to work on the site myself to achieve organic search results.

Any help is appreciated!

301 redirects.....
Text navigation vs pictures
Making sure your css and html validate. (yours doesn't)
Make sure Duplicate meta descriptions 93 you have a different one for each page as much as you can.
Content relevant to title, title tags, descriptions, ect.
Implemented AceSEF - I had to support that extension once and it was problematic for when I had to fix issues with it. I also can't say everything was set up with it correctly from the previous developer.

This is what I can tell you from a quick glance and for free. Have a good day

Thanks for your quick review of my site. I have some questions about your response:

1. “301 redirects” – From where to where? I have already set up 301 redirects for parked domain names, and for http and non-http domains. Unless an established page is re-titled, the page displays as-is without needing 301 redirects. (If I re-title an older page that has already been crawled and indexed, subsequently changing the SEF URL associated with it, then I set up a 301 redirect. But, doing this is a very rare occurrence.)

2. “Making sure your css and html validate” – I was told that this is impossible, because of Joomla and Virtuemart’s hardcode not being able to validate. (Meaning even if I got everything on my site spotless, the core of Joomla and Virtuemart themselves would prevent validation.) Is this true?

3. “Text navigation vs pictures” – I have restructured the dropdown menu so that it is completely text-based. I also have a right-hand navigation for the ecommerce portion of the site, which is also text-based. Yes, there are some images that link to other pages on my site, but for my industry, some images are necessary to promote the product. All images used have Alt. tags for spiders. I am not sure what text navigation you’re referring to.

4. The reason we’ve decided upon AceSEF over other SEF components is because they’ve created pagination problems in my content. If there is a better SEF component available (not sh404SEF due to said pagination problem) I am open to change, but only if my metadata can transfer, too.

You also mention that this is the information you can provide me “from a quick glance and for free.” Do you offer support services? If so, what do you charge? Do you have sites I can view to see the work you’ve done?

I’ll look forward to your reply. Again, thanks for taking the time.

Fix your errors ASAP!!! This is MOST important in my opinion.

Also, the only way to get a higher PR is to get links from sites with a higher PR. Sites with a higher PR that link to you pass off 'link juice' aka PR, with enough backlinks from good, high PR sites, you should see your PR update in the next few months.

Google is now ranking websites with HTTPS higher in its search results:

Code: Select all
