Noob SEO for Photo Website - DIY or Pay for help

Up until now we haven't worried about SEO, and don't have SEF friendly urls set up on our home built Joomla 1.5 site. Now that other things are in place, we need to get this fixed. We need higher ranking of "Edmonton children photographer" and "Edmonton family photographer". I see 2 paths forward. Quick fix that I can do myself, or a longer term contract to pay someone to help. Both are feasible, but right now I need some quick pointers about the best direction to proceed.

What suggestions do you have?

Being a high end studio, people don't just come here from a google search. Referrals from others is important before they will come.

I did a woorank check and woorank suggest DMOZ listing, extending my domain listing expiration date, and being more consistent with keywords.

Not sure that it matters, but our images are not hosted on the site but are pulled by RSS from Flickr by our slideshow component (monoslideshow).

I visited your website. I think the best way for you is connecting with other social channels. Just marketing more on facebook and google plus. Photos are easy to share and people love to share photos. SEO keyword now is not easy because your rank will be effected by friends shared on Google+.

So it's better for you to build a fan page on FB, G+, add friends, share your photos. And of course you should add share buttons under your photos so people can share it easily. Contact to your old customer and add their FB account, tag them on your pictures so you will go viral.

We have a FB fan page with close to 1000 likers, but need to tie FB to our web page better. Any suggestions?

Google+ is new territory that we haven't explored yet.

You have a good fan page so I think you can integrate it to your website. You can do:
- Get a short FB fan page URL : such as: http://www.facebook.com/showandtellphotos
- Create a FB like box to add to to your website.
- Add share button under your photos, so people and share the picture directly to their FB'walls. Encourage customer share them.
- Create a great landing page on FB page. I 'm sure you can do it because your photos are beautiful
- Tag people in your photos at FB page, friends of them can see and know you

You may also want to put your photos on Pinterest, Instragram and Flickr. These social media sites are great for photo sites and can bring clients your way. With regards to on-page optimization make sure that you add a descriptive alt-tag AND a caption on your photographs. Have alt text describe everything in the photograph so it will show up in Google searches. Instead of saying "a girl" say "a beautiful girl with ruddy cheeks enjoying her day out on a beautiful summer day by the lake".

Try to do Citation work that is necessary for any local business and try to get links on your city sites and on photography sites.
