It seem very easy for us to start Joomla! User Group Tampa. I was actually very surprised when I saw the list of user groups at just how few are in the US. Our group is Brand new and we are very interested in finding out what works and doesn't work for other folks running groups.

Thanks !

What is important is to find out what interests your members and to plan activities that meets their needs. Some groups will be highly structured with Joomla presentations while other groups may be as simple as a few people gathering together around their laptops to learn more about Joomla from each other.

Joomla User Groups are amazing groups of people. I definitely want to start one in Eureka, CA if there isn't one already in the area.

Thanks for the Input, I agree with you. I think its really important to find out what the member want to gain from the group and what others might be able to contribute. If we can get those to match up that would be great. So far I have gotten about 5 members and they are all BRAND new to joomla! Thats great to have but I am also hoping to get some more experience users to help out so we can help all the noobies. Its fun to learn and more fun to teach!

How can I get our group listed on the Joomla! User Group site?

Way back in the early 90's I went to a few BBS parties. A BBS is the a predecessor of today's CMS. Since this technology is groundbreaking and still in it's infancy, just as I still have friends from 17 years ago, the people I meet at the next in person meeting, I have a virtual way to stay connected with people. This time around, we can all collaborate virtually at the same time and share information. Having another person next to you who knows how to do what you are banging your head about really makes a big difference, even beginner users can bring alot to the table, by asking those original questions I asked when I first step into the CMS realm, those original questions help me find faster ways to answer the questions and thus leaving me with sharpened basic skills. Similar to teaching kids math. :geek:

Matthew,
Have you had a chance to read the Joomla! User Group FAQ
http://www.opensourcematters.org/content/view/99/70/

This is a good place to begin.

While you are at it, I encourage you to read the Logo Usage and Brand Guide
http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla/the- ... guide.html

When you are ready to register your group, here is the form.
Joomla! User Group Registration
http://www.opensourcematters.org/content/view/96/65/

If you still have questions, please let us know.

All the best to your new JUG!

Yes I did read that and we have already been approved. Those guidelines are great and simple.

I have not gotten any sorta badge to us on the site nor have we been added to the official list. I also understand that this a administered by volunteers and I am not complaining about that at all.

I was thinking if the people who have groups already could share what types of things they are doing that would help others once they have a group. While Joomla! has allot of information on starting the group, I have not seen anything on what to do once you have it.

May by the community could speak up on what sorta things they do in groups and in could eventually make it to the Joomla! Community Site for all to share.

Ideas to share might be
  • content for official group web site
  • ways to get new members to your site to sign up
  • ideas for topics of discussions
  • ideas for events and meetings
  • ideas for the group to be apart of the larger Joomla! Community
I am not asking someone to tell us what to do with the group because we can not think of anything. I just know that we have folks who have successful groups and some who don't. Would be fun to see what works for some and doesn't for others.

For instance. I think the most important thing for our group is how to reach new members. I for one can tell you that I have posted our site on craigslist under "groups" for the Tampa Area. This idea was shared with me from User Group in Seattle. Problem was I just got luckily to have talked to the administrator for that site and by chance we got to talk. What about a forum for User Group administrators on Joomla! Community site. I join the Google group and posted my groups intro over a week ago and Have to see any replies to it and any other action on that site.

Right Now I am documenting what I am doing to get members and what type of results I am having. I can already tell you what works and what doesn't and in a week I have gotten about 4 new members. I am more then happy to share this info with anyone who desires and whens I have enough of it I will post it on our site.

Together we can all accomplish more then we can alone. One thing that turned me on the most about Joomla was the very active online community. I am proud to be a part of that now and hope some day I am can help some others like all the folks on here helping me!

Thanks!

Joomla User Group Greater Seattle.... this group has serious avalanche potential, some of the core people involved have unlimited resources available to them at the local libraries in Washingtion and it seems like there could be up to 15 groups in a very small area... Imagine if you were having trouble getting started, you could put yourself through Joomla boot camp and make excellent use of your library card at the same time. :geek: watch out SEATTLE user groups are snapping into place.

It is good to network with other JUGs to share ideas about starting a new JUG.

Now that I have your blessing, and I am actually back in Eureka for the winter. This is the official beginning of the Humboldt County Joomla User Group. (name subject to change) I had started a club at the Humboldt State University called the Business Technology Leadership Forum. I think this time, I will probably leave the university out of it, and just hold meetings at the public library. All summer I was at Joomla Days and JUG meetings at libraries, except the googplex JDay, but google is kind of library... ;)

Anyways, its official. First meeting to be advertised locally. 8)

We already have like 50 persons waiting for our firts meeting so I hope everything goes fine. I will post the results and info next friday ;)

excellent work on the JUG at your Univ., you are right, somebody needs to reorganize this forum thread in order for people to better digest it. That is what I do for a living. I tweak and tweak and tweak until it is the word that I made up... Precision + Concise = Conscision or at least being able to make a 3 day reading process take only 3 seconds.

Is there a JUG community starter page? that exercises conscision?

in my office, we ask the question... did it happen automagically?

Can starting a joomla user group occur autonomously?

Well I read all the post in this section in a few days and then I went to:

http://www.opensourcematters.org/content/view/99/70/

There are the Joomla! User Group FAQs

Im also in charge of two similar community based groups directed to help people with common interests so when they asked me to start something like this I just said "why not?"

I had been planing our local JUG with another group of people for about a month. All started when an Pro Open Source Organization at the University invited me a few months ago to give an introductory joomla seminar and everybody started to ask, included some professors and deans of different faculties, how they can learn more about joomla, so I heard about JUGs about a year ago and I started to read all about them. Now we are ready to start something at the university that looks too big to be true. A reaaaally big change in some services at the University that will be supported by the administration. Wish me luck! :-[

Micheal,

Sounds cool!

Here is a bit of information about naming a JUG. In order for a JUG to recieve a licence to use "Joomla!" in the name of their JUG, they must register on the Open Source Matters site.

We are inviting all Joomla User Groups to register with OSM
Somebody needs to reorganize this forum thread in order for people to better digest it.
I will look into this.

If you're looking for a second organiser (each JUG needs to have two contacts/organisers) you might try talking to the people in the Orange County JUG and seeing if anyone in that group is more in the Burbank/San Fernando Valley that would organise it with you.
