Firefox and the forum [solved]

Post by Webdongle » Sat Oct 13, 2012 3:26 pm

Recently I have had problems viewing the forum with Firefox. Has anyone else had problems accessing/navigating the forum with Firefox ? Is this a known issue ?

On my win 7 lap top
When I click a link on the forum the connection circle turns anticlockwise
then ...when it starts to turn clockwise the Browser freezes and then in the header "(Firefox is not responding)"
Then the page(and the FF notification on the bottom toolbar) lashes of and then the Browser window reappears with the target page(of the clicked link displaying.

On my G/F's win laptop
Same as above except it does not freeze for as long and does not display "(Firefox is not responding)"

Desktop with Ubuntu also slightly freezes when the connection circle starts to turn clockwise.

Same when I visit extension.org the connection circle (when it changes direction to clockwise) freezes

On all other sites visited (and when using other Browsers on Joomla sites) ... the connection circle (when it changes direction to clockwise) does not freeze, it keeps turning clockwise until the page is displayed.

Addendum
Firefox error log shows it only happening when a style sheet in forum.joomla.org
Timestamp: 13/10/2012 11:35:19 PM
Warning: Error in parsing value for 'background'. Declaration dropped.

The problem goes away sometimes other times it takes longer than others.
Here is a screen shot of the error log.

Very strange behavior your browser is showing indeed. I know in the past I have had issues with FF (though not the same behavior and not just the Joomla forum) which was due to some add-ons I had installed.

I also get the same warnings in the error console. It seems that the warnings can stem from CSS declarations which are meant for other browsers/platforms or are not supported by your current version of the browser and can be ignored. I know it doesn't help but figured I'd let you know I get the same warnings as well.

OK so the errors can be ruled out. I have run FF in safe mode and still the same problem. Stranger still is that the problem is intermittent. It also happens if I visit the forum(with FF) as soon as the laptop boots up. Has to be specific to the laptops here.

Not sure if you have run across these but posting just in case they have some information to help:

It also seems quite a few people have had issues with the flash player plugin causing crashes but then again your issue is only while browsing the Joomla forum here.

Methinks a combination of my FF add ons and something in Joomla. FF is working OK at the moment and I am wondering if it has something to do with when all the spam hits the forums. Perhaps a time out of some kind the FF can't handle. I do sometime get the 'connection reset' message with FF but not with other Browsers.

Now that you mention it, I do recall getting a 'connection reset' message occasionally but only when the forum was being flooded with spam. That happened when I used the "View new posts" option.

With FF if I view my posts the click 'view new posts' I get the "can not search at this time" message. But not with other Browsers.

Methinks it's the FF add ons take time and when Joomla server is busy that it times out a script in FF.

As this is specific to my FF set up then will mark as solved. Thanks for being a sounding board and a base line control.
