Nothing has been decided for that yet Brian. First a security audit needs to happen. Once that's done, Fotis has estimated that it will take about a month to finish work on the initial design/layout.

So the time needed for those tasks is probably pushing us into the 1st part of March before the first issue might be ready to be published. For now I think it would be safe to set February 28 as a copy deadline for the first issue. Earlier would be better to allow more time for editing.

Here's a possible dateline:

1/15 Joomla! Community Magazine Team Forum created @ Joomla.org
1/15 - 1/31 Gather ideas for content, get the word out for content submissions for magazine
2/1 Security Audit Completed - work begins on new magazine layout
2/1 Put out a request for articles
2/15 Magazine template Working Copy Preview
2/22 First Issue Content Submission deadline
3/1 Magazine Template ready
3/5 Magazine Content Structure in place
3/10 Magazine Content for First Issue in place
3/15 Feedback Gathered, Content/Template adjusted
3/20 Joomla! Community Magazine Soft Release
4/1 Official Release of Joomla! Community Magazine

Hey Mark, don't forget

1/18 National Holiday in the USA for my Birthday.

Disguised as MLK Day on calendars to allow Government officials to join the party. :D

I just wanted to add that K2 v2.2 is now publicly available to download and test at http://getk2.org

Security auditing should be conducted on that version, which is what we plan to use to develop the magazine.

I have set up the site for the security audit and installed the public K2 v2.2 on it.

Thanks Mark! This is a good high level summary of the major chunks of work. Here are a few of my thoughts:

* Some of the work can potentially be done concurrently so that might shorten up the timeline
* In addition to the steps you outlined, we also need to plan some time for editing tasks. Hopefully the K2 design can help take care of some "style guide" type elements (titles, bylines, etc.) so authors and editors can focus more on content rather than formatting.
* I have set up the new site with K2 installed for the security audit, but I haven't heard when it might be completed.

I'm actually a little disappointed by the slowness of the proposed timeline. For my part, I've turned in my first column, and I'm sure I'll have at least one other, and probably two more, completed by the current deadline.

Arlen (and everyone else in the Joomla! Community),

The initial timeline was just a "guesstimate", and was certainly generous in its dates. But since many visitors to Joomla.org forums are "unaware" of the relaunch of the magazine, we need to give those people a chance to contribute to the magazine.

I'm sure that once Paul, Airton, and Fotis have the community magazine website up and secure, we'll be able to shorten up many of those dates.

It's always great to have a stockpile of articles to submit. KUDOS to You! Keep up the writing and I look forward to reading your articles!

Hi GOGOGO,

Thanks for your interest in the magazine! Right now it is still being developed. We are hoping for a release toward the end of Q1. When it goes live, you will find links to it from the home page of the Joomla! Community Site.

Hopefully everything went well with the Security audit of the magazine.

We need to complete what types of articles we are looking for, then get the word out to potential writers!

Even with 10-20 articles in the first issue, it would be nice to have 50-100 articles for consideration in future issues.

It seems that one of the keys to having a "fresh" Joomla! Community Magazine will be the "behind the scenes" things that will involve "work flow" issues. Nailing down the "work flow" into well defined steps/expectations will make the Magazine project much more efficient.

Hi Mark,

I am still waiting to hear that the K2 security audit has been completed. I sent an email on Friday asking for a status update on that. I will post an update on this forum about the security audit as soon as I have some news.

You are right that one of the key areas we need to make progress on is defining the type of content we want for the magazine. That will be important not only to authors but also to the Komrade team so they can deliver a design that will work well with our content structure.

I would encourage everyone who is interested in helping to define the magazine's content structure to join in on the discussion at: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=573&t=478683

Hi Timothy,

We don't have a firm deadline yet for articles, but I do have a general update: K2 has passed the security audit, and now we are waiting for the Komrade design team to free up some time to begin work in earnest on the design. According to the last email I got from Fotis, hopefully that work will begin in another week or two.

Previously, Fotis had estimated the design process might take approximately 30 days. There are a lot of other things that can/should be getting worked on concurrently while the design process is underway.

Many of those "other things" referred to in the previous paragraph will have a direct impact on authors (defining content structure, article length/style guidelines, workflow, etc.).

Back to your question: I think it's safe to say we won't have an article submission deadline before March 1 for the first issue, and it could be later than that depending on how the overall work progresses.

Sorry for the long answer to your short question, but hopefully that puts the current situation in a little better context for you and others who are interested in the current status of the magazine project.

Thanks,

paul

As of now 3/30/10 the security audit is now complete per Paul.

That puts us about 2 months behind this initial schedule.

Slowly but surely!

Just to clarify, the security audit was completed over a month ago.
