Use a central login system for joomla.org

Is it possible to use a central login system like the http://stackoverflow.com. Here in joomla we have community, forum, recources, doc, extensions and so on. we have to register each of the seperately and create a profile there. The worst part is all the username is not available in each of them.

Is there and onging process running to accomodate this feature?

+1 for this, took me 3 days to figure out where the register link was for this forum having registered on the extenstions section.

also move the register/login box in the sidebars to the top, as this is a key call to action for users.
