As it currently stands, Joomla is almost a fully mature product. With an easy to use WYSWIG editor, an intuitive backend, and a highly automated extensions feature, Joomla is nearly at the "it works as fast as you think" stage. The last step:
Fully automated AJAX backend
A back end that never requires a page load would be a huge step for Joomla, and would set it apart as perhaps the most user-friendly CMS. I recommend that this be made one of the core features of a Joomla 4.0 or 5.0 release. I'm all ears for discussion, because I think that this, almost more than any other feature, would improve Joomla to an almost finalized state (that is, until new technology comes out).

Re: The Final Step
What an unusual priority. It just goes to show what a varied bunch us Joomla users are. I am fascinated though- why do you think an ajax admin panel would be such a big improvement? Are page refreshes really such a hassle?
Re fully mature/finalized: I think the idea that Joomla is not a matured product is unsupportable. It is one of the most popular and powerful CMSs that can be deployed to pretty much any situation with countless extensions and a documented framework for custom development. Regarding finalized, I hope it's never finalized, that means it wouldn't improve as technology does.

I think the best admin interface would be one where it really is fully automated and you don't need to type or click anything, you just think it and its done. That and no page refreshes obviously.

Re: The Final Step
Bit of a grumble though. I love Version 3, and I'm sure the new interface is scientifcally designed by UX people to be far superior to 2.5, but right now, it's taking me longer to get stuff done because it's not where it used to be. In most cases it's on the opposite side of the screen, or in a vertical menu instead of horizontal. I'll get used to it.
It reminds me of apple fans complaining that androids are so difficult to use because they don't work the same was as an iphone (which should come as no surprise. Often the idea that apple interfaces are more user-friendly is touted as if it's an indisputable fact, but my experiences as an Android user trying to use ios is that nothing works how I want it to. Tangent, I know, sorry, Rant over.

Re: The Final Step
Well, I'll be honest I'm not the joomla expert. That said, I think it would be really nice because after initial setup, pretty much the only thing that takes time is editing articles, so speeding that up would be very convenient for actually running the website as opposed to designing it. As far as "moving as fast as you can", I was thinking about the iPhone, how one of the reasons it stood out so much from the competition was the fact that it could open and close programs almost as fast as you could press buttons. Anyways, the bottom line is that it would make day-to-day managing of the website a good bit faster, especially if you are dealing with many pages.

Re: The Final Step
~ i am struggling with the menu in Joomla 3.0 especially the menu's menu. when i see the drop down and a list of menus clicking on these does nothing, the expanded menu's only option is to add a new one.
I'm expecting to be be taken to the menu page of the menu i have select to get a lists all the items on it.
the only way into this section seems to be from the quick-links on the admin homepage.
