LTS and STS

Post by FlashRebel » Fri May 16, 2014 4:17 pm

Do we really need 2 versions of Joomla ? long and short terms supported ?
IT moves so fast this time, why we need to complicate Joomla from beginning ?

Is there - in Joomla community some ideas that we have only one version of Joomla or it is forgoton thing ?

Volunteer open source projects need some way of separating versions in a manner something like this for a simple reason. If they don't, not enough people will test things.

What's in a name? "Release Candidate" is something you call a beta. Only nerds, hobbyists, and obsessive entrepreneurs, have time for betas. "STS" reduces all that down to simply "bleeding edge." The fact that it's not meant to be supported (aka the fact that it's effectively a Release Candidate) is downplayed by merely calling it STS.

It's just two different ways of educating the user base about the same thing in order to get a useful response :)

if not enough testers ... I think two versions even split these volunters and make Joomla more complicated, biger, harder to maintain.

Joomla will be dead if they force everyone to upgrade their sites every 6 month. A stable LTS is needed. On the other side, a community for innovation and development of newer versions is needed.

Why dead ? Why upgrade ? Wordpress do regular update, iOS X do regular update and they are not death.
From statitistics it looks, like Joomla is dying :(

Hi FlashRebel,

It is only a few weeks ago that the Joomla! Production Leadership Team posted the new and updated development strategy.

Things changed with the start of the Joomla! 3.3.0 release.

The short version of the story: The LTS and STS is dead.
The longer versions of the stories you can find detailed info about at the Developer site:
http://developer.joomla.org/

A good place to start is 'Joomla! Improved Release Cycle: For the People by the People':

The full new Development strategy:

And last but not least, the important 'FAQ's for Joomla's Improved Release Cycle':

Yes, I suppose that the documentation at http://docs.joomla.org/ & http://developer.joomla.org/ needs to be updated with the new information.

English is my 2nd language and I know that English documents can sometimes be difficult for non native English speaking people.
And that's where you and I can help out!

Just by asking questions about long difficult documents so that native English people understand the difficulty for non-native English speaking people. And by (re)writing documentation at http://docs.joomla.org/ in plain English (short sentences, with common English words) so that non native English speaking people can understand it better...
