I've seen this addressed elsewhere in the forums and everyone says to report it as a bug, but I did a search here and no one has yet!

In previous versions of Joomla, when an article was set to expire on a certain date, articles would automatically take themselves from a status of Published to Unpublished. It was VERY easy to recognize which articles were still visible on the frontend of the site when viewing them in the back end.

In Joomla 2.5, the article expires, but the status indicator in the back end still shows the article as published. Was this intentional?

There is a "core hack" available here: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=2730652, but I didn't want to have to reapply the hack every time I updated Joomla.

Is this something that will be addressed in future updates?

a bit of a long shot but have you got cache enabled, this may prevent articles from unpublishing automatically?

The articles expire and remove themselves from the front end of the website... For all intents and purposes they are unpublished, but in the article manager the status is still green and published. This is happening across multiple sites on multiple hosts.

If I click on it to unpublish it, then save it manually, it shows as unpublished.

If I never said it, cache is not enabled. This is still a problem. I know I'm not the only one having it:

This problem has been driving me nuts for months and I finally thought I tried everything, but I caught the end of a thread where a user recommended upgrading the version of PHP to 5.3+ if you weren't already there. I discovered that I was still on 5.2.x so I checked with the host, and sure enough you could upgrade by adding:

Code:
# Use PHP 5.3
AddType application/x-httpd-php53 .php

to the .htaccess file, not for the Joomla site, but for the host control.

I am happy to report that I am no longer having this problem! I wish there was a thread or a note in the documentation somewhere that spelled this out... I went as far as to report a bug on this subject, but it appears that it was a simple lack of knowledge.

If you are using PHP v5.2.x... you HAVE TO upgrade!

It was that simple!

ahuppert - you are a genius! I have been searching for an answer with no luck until reading your post. Both my web host and xampp were on 5.2.xx - neither worked properly. The Joomla demo site works because it is on 5.3.17. After adding the code you suggested (and provided by my web host tech support), the icons display as intended. THANK YOU!

You're welcome! I figured I would post it up here because I know I wasn't the only one having the problem. Something so simple fixes a huge problem!
