Alternative Category Layout Fails to Load Defined Layout

I am experiencing a problem whereby the alternative category layouts I select
fail to load for the particular category, deferring to the default layout. Is there any trick to using the alternative layouts or is this a bug?

Currently reading the following documentation on alternative layouts.

Thinking alternative menu types may be the route to go instead of alternative category layouts.

Having done some research on the use of alternative layouts, I can say that it's all a little confusing and I can see I'm not the only one.

I came across a website with detailed instructions on how to use the alternative menu item layout, and I wanted to share that here. The Joomla Documentation on the subject is a little difficult to make sense of and might benefit from a few examples:
