menu item alias SEF problem

Hi,
I have created menu alias for sub-menu-items to ensure a good user experience on a website. The menu works something like this:

-home
-news (menu item alias, links to news below)
-news (category blog)
- news archive
-about (menu item alias, links to about below)
-about (article)
-map
... etc

This works fine except for one problem: I cannot link directly to the menu aliases. If I go to
http://mywebsite/news/news it works fine, but using just the url http://mywebsite/news fails with a 404-error. Tried to see if this has been reported before but I couldn't find anything. Feature or bug?
