Creating menu item, removing and adding again fails

Post by kennywickstrom » Mon Jun 28, 2010 3:29 pm

If I create a menu item, selecting only the type (single article), selecting a article, making it published and providing a name (e.g. Example). At this point, the menu item is visible in the frontend.

Now "trash" this menu item and follow the steps above. When saving, you get the error
Save failed with the following error: Another item with the same parent has this alias
I looked in db table jos_menu and found the first entry is still in the table.

Are removed menu items be retained in the database for future use? Or is this defect?

FYI, my J1.6 installation is from SVN and my latest update was this morning (28-Jun ~10:00 CDT).

The trash can be compared to the Windows Recycle Bin in a sense that when you move items there, they still exist on the filesystem until it is emptied. You have to change the "- Select State -" view to Trash and empty it before making a new menu item with the same info. I believe this was submitted to the bug tracker and discussed, I just can't remember the outcome.

Thanks for the response. I understand the concept and will perform the necessary steps to clean up. However, many new users will not understand why the menu item failed due the alias especially since its not a required field in the form.

If you want to have the same item with the same alias you should use an alias link rather than creating a new item.

GO to the menu manager.
Instead of selecting internal link, select alias.
This will give you a list of all existing menu items.
Select your desired duplicate link from the list.

I think I figured it out. You use an Alias and you just can't have the same Alias. It really doesn't even matter what you put cause it will pull the alias from the menu item you are pointing to.

Correct, the point of that menu type is to avoid "duplicate content meaning that one page has one URL instead of several different ones. You don't want that because it potentially hurts you with search engines.

Hello Guys, this is my first post on this forum but I've got solution for "kazal, sheiksumon, mamuna2m, sheiksumon" issue.

Guys I know exactly what problem you are having. I had the same issue but I've got solution for that.

The Answer its quite simple.
-Log in to your MYSQL DateBase using myPHP or from Cpanel.
-Search through your main database for xx_menu
-Make sure you can view all files there so max your view at the bottom to 1000 row(s)per page.

Now search for the files you are having problem with and delete. Job Done!

No you certainly do not need to do that and it's asking for trouble since those menu links may also be appearing in the module_menu table.

Please someone help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Im getting the same error even when linking to a menu alias

I Created a menu item to login in a main menu.
Then I tried to create a link to that menu item in a footer menu using the "Menu Item Alias" type.

I get the error message above.

Is anyone else getting the same results? This forces me to have 2 seperate aliases for the same item

pooja ... Featured

XtremeX .... so you are only having this issue on alias types? Do you have error reporting on maximum and can you give us the data from that please? Are you positive you are not using the same alias as the original menu item?

Re: "Save failed with the following error: Another menu item with the same parent has this alias"

There seems to be a problem with the system. I'm working on a new 1.6 site.

I get the same error, above, when simply trying to rename a menu item.
The menu item is a link to a Joomla! standard contact entry. (Single contact). Trying to change menu item from "Contact Me" to "Contact Us" I get the error.
Thinking another site dev. may have tried the "Us" option and trashed it, and seeing the above comment about items in trash affecting how you can name a new menu item, I went looking for the trash. Where is it?!!
The "Trash" button is apparently for trashing a menu item, although in the help file that button is skipped in the description of functions. (Another oversight that should be fixed, no?)
So how do I get to the menu item trash, to fully delete a menu item, assuming that item exists in trash, so that I can rename the existing item without a conflict?

Keep working on it. I'll come back to J 1.6 in about 6 to 9 months!

Once you have trashed, use the filters at the top of the grid to select just the trashed items. Then you will get a delete button and be able to delete them completely.

Also when editing a saved item make sure you edit the alias field not just the title field.

OK, so the original problem is back: There is nothing that has been trashed, and the menu (alias) cannot be renamed.
Just returns an error saying "Save failed with the following error: Another menu item with the same parent has this alias"
I did attempt to change the alias to correspond to the new menu item title.

Hmmm.......

Ok would you mind using jing or somethign to actually show me step by step what you are doing?
It's partly confusing because of the two different uses of the term alias.

Here are screen shots of the three step process,
1. Open menu item:
existing_menu_item.jpg
2. Type in new name and new alias
planned_new_menu_name.jpg
3. Press Save and Close - returns an error.

Do you have the sample data installed?
There is a link with the alias contact-us in the fruit shop menu.
What happens if you try contact-me?

Update:
Yes, i can reproduce the problem if I make that Single Content menu link have no parent (parent=menu root) and change the alias to match that in the fruit shop menu.
So this is really expected behavior because if there are two aliases at menu root that are the same, then we don't know which page to render when going to the url (contact-us.html).
So we must fix our vision not merely on the negative expulsion of war, but upon the positive affirmation of peace. MLK 1964.

Hi again

I am using the fruitshop template, beez5, but not sample data (sample data was never installed). There are no menus pre-installed and no other menus with the same name/alias. I only have three menu items, Home, Testimonials and Contact.
(url for site is www.paintingbygerald.com)
In 1.5 if I create a new menu item it defaults to last place and takes a first level place on the menu tree.

It seems that the same happens in 1.6 - the new menu item is not a sub-menu of anything. It points to a url and has a seemingly unique alias. That said, it is "contact-us" as an alias which generates the error. We originally had "contact-me" and wanted to use "contact-us". "contact-me" worked, as does "contact".
It may make sense code-wise, but doesn't make any sense on the user end that a menu alias I've never used is a duplicate and can't be used. Also there are no trashed menu items, so nothing I can fix to make it work as far as I can tell.
Cheers
John
