Email cloaking not working properly

I searched the forum, but couldn't find anything related to my problem.
I believe the Joomla default email cloaking plugin is not working properly.
I set it to display only text, but it still adds the mailto: link, which is not the expected behavior. Adding the mailto link prevents the use of the contact form, which has spam control, because people tend to click on the email address instead of the name of the contact.

We still want to display email address securely, so that bots don't harvest them, but we don't want them clickable. Is there any way to accomplish this?
It seems to me that the data is being saved in the database with the link, and not just the text, but I haven't been able to access the database to confirm this.

I looked at plugins/content/emailcloak/emailcloak.php but it doesn't seem to check for the text parameter. I don't know how to add that feature either, if it's missing at all.
