Website URL : ChocolatePillow.com - UK Hotel Reviews
Template: Yoothemes Loom
Additional Extensions (Components, Modules, Plug ins): JReviews Extension, Tabs and Slides Plugin, JPromoter, Fireboard Forum, AEC Subscription Manager, JCE Editor, MyBlog, Ciommunity Builder, JIM
[size=150]Custom Development: Custom changes to the template itself with CSS edition. Various changed to the layout of the JReviews Templates
Other Features: Flash Elements on Homepage
Three (at least) specific areas of my site that I'd like feedback on (design, code, graphics, etc.): -
1. How this appears in browsers (I use IE7 so want to know what other browsers are like)?
2. What would make you register?
3. What can you suggest to improve this site?
4. What are your likes and Dislikes?
Additional Comments:This site is designed for hoteliers and real guests for reviewing hotels and guest houses in the UK - registration is needed to add reviews and I am looking to get new members but want to get as much feedback as possible before launching marketing...

Looks good enough to eat in Firefox :-) (I know... lame joke!)

In all honesty, I'm not at all crazy about the graphics. It looks like you've scrambled to find anything chocolate related and put it on there. The "logo" with the pillow/chocolate bar inside the shell isn't very attractive either and I think you need to simplify it somehow.

But my disappointment actually goes deeper than that... I don't understand the premise of the site. Chocolate Pillow makes me think of romantic inns, cozy fireplaces, jacuzzis, chocolate dipped strawberries, honeymoon getaways - things like this. To then find a site which rates regular hotels is somewhat disappointing... I can get that from most travel sites.

I really don't want to rain on your parade here, but if I were you, I'd rethink the whole concept - or change the name. I would have loved to see you specialize in reviewing romantic getaways/hotels - places to escape to for the weekend with somebody you love. Which one has the coziest pillows? Which one will serve breakfast in bed? How far is it to that scenic vista point? What did the owner/host do to make the honeymoon so special?

But then again - that's just my opinion...

Either way - I'd definitely recommend some more work on the graphics. Try to find something that's not so "cliché"... I think you've done a good job in simplifying the menus - narrowed it down to the basics, which makes the site easy to navigate...

I did notice some of the articles you had listed, ended rather abruptly - and there was no "read more" tag at the end... You may want to correct that.

Other than that - all my best!

Hi,

What did you use to create your navigation?

Thanks!

Hi Guys - I will respond in turn:

Download This - Thankyou for actually taking the time to provide some well thought out advice and suggestions, It has made me think and has all been taken constructively - My main issue was trying to understand what it looks like to an 'outsider' and a lot of people just tell me it looks great and that it....

The logo is gone...totally... It was an experiment in Photoshop that plumbed for being the best I could produce.

The articles are auto generated in the reviews component based on content submitted - adding readmore tags is too complicated to explain for the average layman adding a hotel for review...the idea is for poeple to register, add the hotel, then review it.

Your points are well taken though - I have had a re-think on the site, simplified the graphics and am now redesigning the information on there, to make this more targeted towards the luxury end of the market, rather than everything. The initial idea was to provide more in-depth reviews, rather than just a scale of 1 to 5 with someone slagging off a hotel but not actually looking at what was good and what wasnt so good - registered members get access to a lot more review details, however I am rethinking this to allow access to the greater detail reviews for all?

Thankyou for the jolt into reality with your comments though, extremely grateful for these, especially as you can get blinded when designing your own site...

Stanhook - The navigation (as you will have seen it) is generated with several things - the main menu (that slid open and expanded to reveal the menu picture when you hovered over it) was generated using Yoodrawer - available on the yoothemes website. The UK Map was generated using Adobe software - I used a GIF image of the UK and used ImageReady to overlay an image map with links to the respective areas of the site ( I believe you can also do this using GIMP (available from gimp.org for free). It can seem really complicated to do but is quite easy when you know how. then just embedded it into the forntpage article.

Hi again Raaboo - I'm glad you took my critique in the same Spirit in which it was meant: as constructive. You are absolutely right about us getting blinded by our own glory and shine when we work on our own projects - it's very easy to lost touch with "reality" and plug along down the same path we started (even thought it may be the wrong one).

That is why I make a point of working on a project for a few days, step away for a while and then come back. I'll spend the days between to check out other sites in the same industry to get a feel for what I'm missing and what I need to improve on. While my fingers may be itching to get back to my current project, it's good to break away and clear my mind every now and then.

I took another look at your "new and improved" site :-) And you are DEFINITELY on the right track now... The deep, red color is much better suited for your line of "expertise" and the name of your site. The theme you have selected with the fading graphics is classy and should work well for your reviews... In all, it's much cleaner and professional this way.

I'd again encourage you to keep your mind open as to the direction you want to take... It's tempting to want to be everything-for-everybody, but then the competition it too fierce. Based on my experience, much, MUCH better to specialize and be the-ultimate-source-for-a-few.

Hotel reviews are plentiful - can't swing a dead cat without hitting on a site that offers them. What is going to make yours stand out? Why would people come to you to look for reviews rather than going to the larger sites? Why are your reviews better, and whom are you targeting? I don't think the answer is the scale itself (if it's 1-of-5, or 1-of-10), but rather the PERSONAL experiences people have had while staying there.

You may want to find a way to allow people to post their own pictures of their room and the hotel. After all, the hotel will always want to present itself in the best possible light and will always include fancy shots of the lobby and the Junior Suite on their website. Problem is, we don't sleep in the lobby, and most of us want the least expensive room and never see the inside of the Suite.

People would value seeing what it's really like in the room... If I take a picture of the broken tiles in the bathroom and the leaking toilet, THAT's something others would find valuable and that you wouldn't see on Expedia! Check our http://www.realhotelphotos.com for an idea of what I'm talking about (no, I have nothing to do with this site :-)).

You have limited yourself somewhat by the choice of domain-name (in a good way, in my opinion). The Chocolate Pillow... Ask people what it makes them think of, and don't fight the response. I sincerely doubt anybody will come out and say it makes them think of hotel reviews for a Holiday Inn by the airport. My expectation, as mentioned, would be travel and getaway ideas for "sweet, romantic inns and hotels".

Anyway - hoping this encourages another burst of creativity, I remain,

Yours Truly

I like this site, what i would like to know is, what are you using for people to do the reviews, what component are you using to do this.

It looks good. Maybe it is just me, but could you use some pictures of your most popular hotels on the top rotating banner instead of the cartoon-ish pics? I think it would give you that little added professionalism that your high end consumer may be looking for. Looks really, really good overall.
