Every time a new users is created, they do not get assigned to Registered user group (as set in the options) I tried change the default and they still get no usergroup assigned apon creation.

This was working fine as far as I could tell for 1.6.0 Beta15, but stopped in 1.6.0 RC1. (Upgraded from Beta 15)

Any suggestion how I could fix this problem?

Wait until the bug is fixed? It's been reported on the bug tracker, so it's not a user configuration issue. http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=23819
