Now I'm sure there is more than one way to do this but here is my suggestion.

Use Firefox add the extension "FireBug"

Once you have installed Firebug do this:

Click on the FireBug icon
Select the Inspect Element icon (2nd icon with blue arrow)
Click on the space you want to remove
On the right hand side scroll down to the bottom of the 1st section to the heading "#content > div"
Put your cursor on the word "Padding: 20px" click on the circle with a line through it.

Your article is now removed and a single line is left.

I have added a screen shot of how I done it, I added an arrow to the section
I changed.

If you like the way this looks then find this element on line 25 in this file "http://www.smilyo.com/cache/template/gzip.php?template-5854de27.css" and comment out the line "Padding: 20px".
If you use a program called TextPad, under view select Line Number then you can find the line much quicker.

Be sure to make a copy of the file before you change it.

I hope this helped...if not at least I tried.

Whatever you want to display on the "home" page is dependent upon what menu item "type" selected for the DEFAULT home page layout. It can be anything and display any content generated by Joomla's components or extensions.

Select "what" you want on the home page, set it up and designate it as the DEFAULT in the menu manager.

Not sure I understand the issue, re: what do you want to be displayed?

The front page can be anything you want and is selected by designating the "type" of layout you want for the HOME PAGE DEFAULT menu item.

If you want only modules, select a single article layout and embed the modules into it with {loadposition posname} in the article's text.

External Link to show as "home page??"

Yes, use the "WRAPPER" option for home menu link item default.

IFrame Wrapper in the "Select" menu item type list.

It has a big bold section heading = Wrapper

If you are seeking to display another "webpage" on the front page of a Joomla site, to display in the main content area, you must use the iframe wrapper menu type for the "home" page.

Or, am I misunderstanding "what" you are seeking to display.

if what i understand is right, here is my suggestion:

joomla have an article to display in the home page by default, just put something like a <div> in it and stylized as display:none;. with this, the article is there but no one couldn't see it
