Hi,
I am new to Joomla, say beginner to intermediate. Can anybody explain to me how to access the database on a webserver? A database is created automatically when you work directly from the webserver? Anyway to add nore fields on a registration form and have access to the data from the database? what's the database relation between the Admin and the Database?

Thank you in advance
Lucas

Hi. What webserver are you using? I use Wamp and it means that I can access my databases via PhpMyAdmin. This is accessible from the wampserver dialog box.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I working direct from the Hosting provider, i guess the same files are there too. What i dont understand is how to access them? how they are related? a database is automatically created with the installation but in all the lessons they say you need to create a database, so you have to create a second database? what can you do exactly with the database? whats the exact purpose?
Thank you in advance
Lucas

loucas66,
There are different control panels used by different web hosting providers. One of the common ones is cpanel. Which one are you using? When you login to the web hosting account the name of the control panel should be displayed.

Within this panel you will have facility to view the web files and to manage the sql database. phpMyAdmin is a web based tool that you should see listed in this panel. It can be used to view and edit the databases. You will need the username & password for your account to view all your databases or the username & password you used during your joomla installation to view the database associated with your joomla installation.

Simply adding a field to the database does not add the field to the registration form.
This needs to be a combination of the PHP script on the Web server and then the database.
There are extensions that are available that you should look at first before trying to create your own. Community Builder plus extensions, or just a specific registration form modifier. This takes all the hard work out of what you are trying to achieve.
