Hi! Is there a component available that can:

1. Change the name of a folder (or file)
2. AND: Change all the existing links in articles to the files in this change folder?

Thanks!

Hi jjonker,

Are you referring to a category name or alias? Generally you're not dealing with actual folders in Joomla, but instead everything is created dynamically using titles and aliases.

I don't know of a plugin that can do this, but if you're familiar with phpMyAdmin and have access to it, let us know because there should be a "find and replace" query we can give to you that will globally make this change for you.

Hi bradm,

Thanks for you're reply. I'm refering to an document folder/directory on the server. Not a category. For expample: 'images/stories/myfolder/'

When I change this folder /directory to 'images/stories/mynewfolder' I would like to have the option to find all links containing ''images/stories/myfolder/' to be changed to 'images/stories/mynewfolder'.

I know I can do this directly in the database. But I would like for my clients to be able to do this without having to know anything about handeling a database... a search and replace command is also potentially dangerous if you don't knwo what you're doing.

So I was wondering if there was maybe a file manager with a build in option to find en replace links based on the renaming you do.

Hi jjonker,

Thanks for clarifying for me.

I am not aware of a tool that will do this automatically. For example, most file managers will include some kind of find and replace tool, but it will not loop through every article in the database and perform the find and replace.

Is there a reason for the need to rename an images folder? Is it a client of yours just needing something a certain way, or are they trying to do it for SEO?

Also, are you familiar with php? Have you every written a quick Joomla component? I'd be happy to help, it sounds like an easy task programming wise.

Hi BradM,

Thanks for your reply. It's just one client who asked for this feature. But I can image other might want to use a similar tool as well. Maybe not for SEO reason, but maybe to reorganize their folder structure. The client who asked for this features wants to keel the folder structure kind of synchronized with the categories in Joomla. When you change something in the categories you might want this change to also reflect in your file structure.

And for some maybe this could be used to find out if images of files are being used at all in the website. Ik you want to clean up (old) files but you are not sure i they are used on the site. Maybe on a content-rich news site. I always encourage my clients to think about how to organize files and images (maybe even folder for every year of month) but not everyone is that organized ;-)

So the tool might also check if a link is used on the website prior to deletion.

I thin maybe this would be a great feature for JCE editor. My favorite Joomla editor. This would probably be the most logical place to implement this. But a standalone component could also be a way to go.

I've not written a component before. A module is as far as I got... Maybe this would be a nice challenge. But I'm afraid I don't have the time... If you are interested in developing such a component I would be glad to give input and do some testing.

Hi jjonker,

I'm thinking a component could be created called:
Joomla organizer for Admins

The component could focus on organizing pictures at first, giving the ability to:
1. View a listing of all images and how many article's they're used in
2. Renaming any single image folder and subsequently adjust the references to the image in the database

I may be able to get some time in my schedule to work on this. I'll touch base with you soon, and let you know.

Hi bardM,

I checked my old posts and came across this once as well. Have you ever looked in to this further? Just curious...

Hi Jip,

Wow, this was an old post, looks like it's over a year old now lol. Honestly, I don't remember what happened with this one, I wasn't able to spend much time on it though.

Were you still having an issue with this, or just curious if anything came out of this post?

Thanks,
- Brad
